Over 15 years but I have read a discarded paper occasionally in a café.

I often purchase and read the New York Post, mainly for the opinion pieces.

Years. Once we went to eReaders, actually before, we started getting our news off of the I-net. You don't have to worry about the paperboy getting the paper to your doorstep when it snows.

You could do it a bit with modelling clay, but silly putty was always better for it. If you could find it, though. I remember seeing ads for it, but it wasn't until I was in high school that I could actually find it in stores.

A really long time ago. The last newspapers I purchased were the really good Spanish newspaper El Pais, and I was getting the special edition that included some global or travel magazine - Aceflor, was that the Wednesday edition? Of course, I got it in Gemany, so it was probably a few days old. That was back in college, and the main purpose was to build up vocabulary. I then decided that I was going to only read the online version, but with that, I noticed that I was no longer reading full articles and thus commenced the skimming of news. I feel bad because I am contributing to the death of newspapers, but much like paper maps, I just never could stand the unruliness of their size. There is this very sad website you guys may be interested it - it chronicles the death of (US?) papers - one by one: newspaperdeathwatch.com |

How does this affect young kids? No papers means no paper routes which means later introduction to working for your own money, or do they have other alternatives?

Teenagers, sure. Kids, not so much. It seems as though there aren't many employment options for kids. There is household chores, babysitting, delivering flyers, and doing light lawn work for neighbours like mowing lawns and shovelling snow. Yet there wasn't much out there to start with and it doesn't seem like new options are developing, which makes losing paper delivery a tragic loss in some respects. Being able to focus more on school rather than taking a job is great for some kids, but other kids need something where they see immediate returns. (Studying for a career is abstract. Earning money is concrete.) |

My wife and I love the mountains. She in particular relishes the waterfalls. I like the crags. We were in Cades Cove, TN one time and went inside a very old mountain cabin. They had used newspaper and magazine pages for wall paper. Essentially insulation. Very interesting decor. I didn't mind the newspaper form. You could quickly pick what you wanted to read. |
