on 5 due to the higher res screen. Six is too large, they needed more increments IMO to compensate for that. I found the text looked quite blurry on the paperwhite, this of course has been my experience. I had three paperwhites and sent them all back for coloration problems the last one for a refund. |

The only defects I can find on my device are few small bright dots visible when backlight is set on very high level, there's little light around and PW is tilted in some ways, but I have to really want to notice them in order to see them - it looks like small brocade dots lying on screen, visible only from certain angles. Other than that, I seem to be lucky, as there's no red or blue tilts nor any light leakage. |

My fonts are sharper and the text or contrast doesn't change when I turn on the light. I've never used the k4 so its hard to compare, but out of the three kindle I own (kk, kt, pw) the paperwhite easily has the best display. Maybe it's because I had the Kobo glo which really did look like an LCD with the light turned on, but I find that the paperwhite even with the light turned up to maximum just feels like lighted paper.

Yes I returned it because the battery was draining too fast when I had the WiFi on ;A full battery would drain in less than 10 minutes. The battery also didn't hold up well when I did anything other than turn pages and the screen wasn't as responsive as it should be.

I had a look at the demo models in Waterstones today. Putting the K4B and the PW (with the light at it's lowest setting) side by side the screen on the K4 looked very slightly lighter, and the fonts ever so slightly darker, but the fonts on the PW looked better, more smooth and solid.
Turning the light up to even just 5 or 6 made the PW screen look a whole lot better, and didn't do anything to the fonts. It was only with the light turned up to 15 or more that it started to lighten the text. Obviously being in a shop I couldn't look at the screen in the dark, but I couldn't see a hint of colour on the screen, and the lighting was fairly even along the bottom, better looking than most of the photos I've seen posted - even the good ones. On the basis of the two demo models in that one shop, I'm pretty tempted by the PW now! ![]() Edited to add: the only thing I didn't like was the text justification, it was set at it's widest but seemed a bit too far in from the left of the screen? I don't have a comparison screenshot handy, but I really love the new high resolution display for PDF reading. At normal reading distance of about half arm's length I have absolutely no problems making out most PDFs, whether technical or illustrative. The only problem I've had so far is one chart in one PDF which contained fonts so small that I had to enlarge on my iPad as well.
Just one example I happened to have underhand. I can take others of varying PDF books if anyone is interested. Light ~14, contrast @max: ![]() |

For me, the higher resolution on the pw is obvious, and the finer text compared to the k3 makes it more aesthetically pleasing, color blobs aside. It LOOKS nice. HOWEVER, this does not translate into a better reading experience for me. With good lighting, the k3 has noticeably darker text and therefore better contrast. I dont think it's a matter of font rendering. The "ink" is blacker on the k3. After prolonged reading sessions on the pw, I realized I was tensing. Something about the screen doesn't agree with me.
