AFAIK the reader consumes more power when fully on compared to standby. I think the processor is halted in that state too and various other bits and pieces stop consuming power, but I am not an expert there.

As for PDF viewing, I'm not overly thrilled. But it is definitely better than the V1 "where is my magnifying glass" experience.

People have reported better or equivalent battery life with the new firmware. I also hesitated because of battery life concerns but I upgraded and am very happy I did so, mostly because the Universal Flasher is a godsend.

Otherwise, your battery may be defective if it only lasts a week reading only 250 pages. People do say shutting down saves a lot of battery life, but even so.. I could imagine my Reader going down by one bar if I only read 250 pages and had it on standby for a week. Not all four bars.

update 505 vs jswolf hack

Well luckily i hacked went on training in germany and did not have the update installed yet.

so far i was able to read a 1000 pages on 1 bar of the battery meter, so switchting off makes a huge difference!

And yes russian cyrillics in unicode are now readable!

now the question what will happen if i update? a gf of me is russian and she is purchasing a reader just for that..... big chance she is getting one with the new firmware allready in place.

Two weeks ago I upgraded from firmware 1.0.00.08130 to the latest firmware and the difference is like night and day, no comparison. Although I am not getting 1,000 pages off of one bar the new firmware is a positive step forward.

I have not charged the reader since the upgrade and am not quite happy with the results.

On a side note I just bought another silver PRS505 off of ebay for $49.00 w/free shipping and hope that it is usable. The description was a generic one that the seller uses on all his stuff, so it may or may not work. We shall see.

Well I received the Ebook reader yesterday, which took three days to receive. The unit appeared to be new and unused, but only came with the reader, and the cover.

Immediatly out of the box the screen showed that the unit was starting up. I tried several resets, and key combinations to no avail. The screen just showe the same message.

I hooked the unit to my laptop and there was no response from teh laptop on any new devices, but the charger light on the ebook reader was on. I took a rest, and revisited the issue.

I hooked up a external charger, and let the unit charge until the red light went out. I attempted to turn the unit off and it continued to restart to the same screen - stating that the unit was starting up. The reset switch did nothing. At lease the screen was now updating.

Now that the unit was charged I could hook it up to a computer and the computer would now show the unit and it's memory slots as available drives letters.

I downloaded the latest Sony firmware, and attempted to install it, but received the "please wait" message. This message lasted for about 15 minutes and then came up with a message for me to plug in the reader although it was already plugged into the USB port. I canceled the installation and eject the reader. Now the unit was rebooting with a more promising result, but never fully initialized.

I plugged the unit back into the USB port, and this time it showed the USB connection on the screen. I then started the firmware upgrade again and just waited. After about 20 minutes the unit upgrade showed the current version of firmware on the unit, and of course the version that the unit would be upgraded to.

I proceeded with the upgrade which went flawlessly, unplugged the reader from the reader, and the unit was mostly fully recovered to the state of my other Sony reader.

Upon looking at the directory structure I noticed that the only directoy on the unit was database\cache. All of the other directories were missing, which probably contributed to the initial hang-up.

I simply copied the directories from my other ebook (minus the media), and now the unit is fully recovered and ready to be put into service.

Not bad for $49
