You want to really get to them? Subject them to the discussion and inflict Michel Bolton at the same time.

Not that I am a fan of the behemoth in Redmond but at least you have to opt in with Microsofts data transmissions, when I install their software I'm politely asked if I want to help in enhancing the experience by sharing annonymous data.
Amazon makes it obligatory in their ToS, but like you I haven't had a problem with it so far and I too like a lot of the recommendations that comes my way. Had it not been for my purchasing history I doubt that I had been contacted about the 87th Precinct series and that took a long time to purchase because there were so many available during such a short time span. However, not everyone is as paranoid as I am, some are more concerened about their privacy and I can fully understand their desire to know what exactly is being transmitted and for what reason.
Imagine your wife found out that you had purchased boks from an IP address that belonged to your girlfriend?

I just can't be that evil

Maybe I should re-think this whole Evil Overlord thing. I just can't seem to get anything right. A few years back, I sent some Bare Naked Ladies to corrupt the male youth of America - turns out they were a band! And all men! If your own Evil Empire can't have truth in advertising, then you just aren't opressive enough. Plus the throne of (beaver) skulls is giving me hemroids.....

Don't worry MrsJoseph, you'll still get your minions - they just won job security for life in the latest contract talks......(hope they don't find out the skulls were all from road-kill, or they'll really walk all over me in the next round of negotiations)

Amazon still keeps track of what I buy and makes recommendations. I get them when I go to amazon.com which I do almost daily. I just keep my reader off the grid. I buy from amazon, load to calibre, strip drm then side load to my K4.

Most are just for fault diagnostics. But what use would GPS location be for that?

Haven't the faintest idea, which is why I asked if you were sure that this really was sent to Amazon. Is it?

The obvious reason would be to check on geo-restrictions. However, Americans on visits abroad would hardly be restricted to buy books for their Kindles just because they are outside the country for a while, would they?

Don't see why not. After all, if NCSoft/ArenaNet can do it for the upcoming Guild Wars 2 (where you have to buy a version of the game matching your EU/rest-of-world region to log in and play - and be locked out if you travel or move to the other region and don't buy the copy for that region, though even then that counts as a separate account so that you won't have access to your existing characters!), it should be no problem for Amazon or any other bookseller.

Does Amazon anywhere state exactly what data it gleans from its wireless devices? Or does it reserve carte blanche?

That's a good question. For all the ebook sellers.
