hp touchsmart, same deal, but still cant downgrade enough to get to mac specs. $579

wanna do laptops too?
Nice try.

The HP has a smaller screen (couldn't find specs for the quality of the screen) and slower graphics card, no firewire or thunderbolt. Granted, the HP did come with 1TB not 500GB hard drive.

When I added in the items to match the Mac spec (except firewire and thunderbolt), I got to $1107.98. 2.5GHz Quad core, remember.

• Genuine Windows 7 Professional [64-bit]
• AMD quad-core A8-3820 Accelerated Processor [ 2.5GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, Max Memory Speed: DDR3-1600]
• FREE UPGRADE to 4GB DDR3-1333MHz SODIMM [2 DIMMs] from 2GB
• 1TB 7200 rpm SATA hard drive
• Microsoft(R) Office Starter: reduced-functionality Word & Excel w/ ads. No PowerPoint or Outlook
• No additional security software
• Integrated graphics - ATI Radeon HD 4270
• Speaker System Z313
• Slim Tray SuperMulti DVD burner
• Premium Wireless-N LAN card and Bluetooth(R )(2x2)
• 6 in 1 memory card reader, 2 x USB 2.0, audio
• No TV Tuner
• Integrated sound
• HP wireless keyboard and wireless optical mouse
• Roxio PhotoSuite 9 Deluxe
• SAVE $20 on Roxio Creator 2012

Even leaving off the iPhoto and iMovie software equivalents, it come to $989.98.

The Dell is interesting. 23" screen which is a bonus. But nowhere near half the price.

You lose, I think. You have not found a similar spec machine anywhere near half the price.

Of course, you can find machines that are half the price. Which may be all some people want. I didn't dispute that.

I did say that you couldn't get the same spec machine for half price. Thanks for demonstrating that that's true.

Are the people that you quoted the one's you're addressing here?
I'm fairly certain I don't participate in calling Mac users derogatory names. As I indicated before, I have uses for all three of the major OSs at different times for different things. I'm agnostic when it comes to OS choice... which is what I was implying by agreeing that that there's no real difference between Mac and PC. It's all personal computing hardware with software that works for somebody.

But perhaps I've completely misread your post? I do that occasionally.

EDIT: never mind. I'm obviously confused. But mostly happy I'm on the sidelines of the whole Mac vs PC thang.

It's a big thread -- I assumed she was talking to someone other than you or me.

I don't think Mac users are hipsters, but I do remember that -- at least for awhile there -- all the really nice artistic programs (including Scrivener!) were Mac-only. So I think that's where the stereotype came from.

I want to be artistic and sync with Scrivener but the Windows version hasn't been updated yet I don't think.

I thought Scrivener for windows had updated. It is out of beta. I just sent a link to the windows version to a friend as I use and love the mac version.

Must be!

It hasn't been updated since they left beta to my knowledge. I bought it right out of the gate. No updates so far, and no Sync which has been the highest request on the forums, as far as I can see.

I'm not complaining, as I love the tool. I'm just jealous that the Mac version is so much more robust.

I don't know how you'd categorize me, and nor do I care. I have a Mac and a Windows PC on my desk, and use both an iPhone and an Android tablet on a daily basis. I swap back and forth several times a day without thinking of it.

My 2 Yens worth..... I think that having Android (though I think Google would have preferred the official Chrome OS) to finally be growing in the market....along with ereaders has helped to make Linux or linux based OSes more popular to where now we actually have Windows OS, Mac OS and Linux OS variants to chose from in a large variety of devices. I think that is good for the market and will hopefully keep the market more innovative for years to come without killing off any one OS (Actually, I wish their were more OSes that were popular).

As far as Mac vs PC... Too many cliches on both sides.... PCs have more choices of software...maybe true but not so much anymore.... Macs never break down or get viruses... and PCs do....(cough, cough)....I have not had any of my PCs get a virus or breakdown for more than a decade...one of my old PCs..a Toshiba is 8 years old and still works for a mate of mine....In the end the more choices the better for market.

Personally, I have had too many Mac users over the years coming across as overzealous in their love of Mac and condemning of all non-mac machines. I just find it ironic that most of these people use Microsoft Word...which I have not used since Open office 1.0 came out...not to mention Office libre, Atlantis, Google Docs...and several other companies that make good word, excel,etc... software for windows, mac and linux systems......

Funny, never saw a mouse on a Mac laptop... only trackpad... and mice for Macs have been as many buttons as you want for years... and all fully programmable without needing any extra drivers... no difference in using PCs to Macs these days from that point...
