Again, not being a student of porn or of erotica, or even really of romance novels (I'm just a reader), this is just off the top of my head.

it's all in the plot to sex ratio.

In a romance novel, there is a plot, generally character-driven, that relates to courtship and romance. If there are sex scenes, they naturally arise from the development of the relationship. Sex scenes that are just thrown in there because the author's agent said to sex it up (or something like that) are seen as gratuitous and, in reviews, the book tends to be downgraded for it. Sex is seen not for itself, but as how it furthers the relationship.

in porn, I think, any plot is simply there as an excuse for the sex, if the plot is anything more than just a scenario. Sex exists for it's own sake, not to further either plot or characterization. I've only read a few porn books and the only porn movie I've ever seen was Behind the Green Door, 30+ years ago when I was in college, so this is drawing on other people's comments and only very limited experience.

You know what's funny? The best romance book I've read has been 11/22/63 by Stephen King. The romance between the two main characters trumped EVERYTHING else in the book.

If I were to read romance it would have to be almost romantic comedy type thing.

If you want romantic comedy, you can't go wrong with Jennifer Crusie.

People either love or hate Bet Me. Those who don't like Bet Me seem to like Welcome to Temptation.

Well I can't get either one from the library, so I'll see if there is even an eBook version available and I'll trust you and give it a shot....I blame you if I hate it and never read the genre again :P LOL

I thought that the issue was that the mother thought a size 12 was fat...while her (super scrumptious) bf thought she was sexy.

I have a limited tolerance for Crusie myself - I am not totally into romcom.

I also loved Susan Elizabeth Philips' book Natural Born Charmer, but that's just about the only one of her books I liked.

lol! I hated Natural Born Charmer. But - for me - it was more the parents. I hated them all. The only person I loved was Nina.

SEP is another one of those authors who seem to inspire either love or hate in her books. In general, I can't stand how she treats her heroines. I just liked Natural Born Charmer because I thought it was quirky-cute.

So much love for Nora Roberts. Three Fates is one of my all-time favorite Nora titles. Romance and cat burglary; you really can't go wrong. I'd also recommend Midnight Bayou and Carolina Moon for anyone who likes a touch of ghosts and the Southern Gothic, and The Birthright for a good second chance romance. The Birthright and Midnight Bayou also alternate between the male and female characters' POV. I can't remember what POV Carolina Moon has, it's been too long since I read it.

I would love to find some good erotica. I kind of like the BDSM but have not been able to find books that do a good job of telling said stories in a way that is not totally demeaning and hence annoying. Literotica is a good website to find short stories but I have not been able to find authors that write longer stories that I have enjoyed.
