This really is one of the main reasons why I use a reader and not a tablet. I want to focus on the book. I was diagnosed with ADHD last year, after showing symptoms for the last few years (oddly enough, not as a child), and I am better able to get immersed into the book if don't read on a computer or tablet.

We've seen these very same arguments here on MR. It amounts to people with ADD claiming everyone is like them and therefore should be locked away in a silent library or in a small island with a coconut on one hand and a dead tree on the other.

Even so, there is one way for ADD people to enjoy reading on the tablet: uninstall all games and turn of networking. There. Nothing more to distract you but heaps of other books.

I'm not saying that everyone is like me, or anything of the sort. I am just saying for me, using my reader is better than me using my tablet or PC for reading. I have nothing else distracting me, and the inability to do other things besides reading on that device prevents me from randomly sidetracking myself.

If you use a tablet, and it works for you, good. If it isn't your thing, that's fine too.

Now, I've also not seen anyone else make those sort of claims, that everyone needs to be locked down.

Btw, sounds like you need to upgrade your phones OS, as Apple improved the notification system.

My OS is up to date. But that doesn't mean it's not distracting.

Oh, well. Yall have one view...I have another, slightly less "blame the reader" view.

Well, you still do need to change the settings so it doesn't always beep or pop-up a message every time your phone receives a notification. The only notification I have enabled on my phone is for phone calls and text messages. The email, I have on manual. Having a whiny younger brother, I've become very well trained in the art of ignoring annoying distractions.

Yeah, life is full of distractions, but for many people, such as myself, out of sight out of mind. I have my phone in my pocket, but I'm not thinking about it unless it is actively trying to grab my attention. If I am reading on my phone, I'm much more likely to see the even minimally invasive visual alerts. Do you see the blinking LED on your phone if it is in your pocket? Do you see it, when it is right in your hand, and you're staring at the phone?

Plus, I'm just an old *nix user, who believes in the addage, do one thing and do it well.

I've noticed that a lot of the people who claim that computers don't distract them are often just as distracted by computers as the rest of us. They simply don't see it as a problem. I'm not saying it's always true since some people seem to have rock solid concentration, but it seems to be true often enough to matter.

It's also worth considering that different things distract different people. Some are distracted by noise, others by friends/colleagues, many by the Internet, etc.. Yet chances are that a given person isn't distracted by all of the above.

It is a matter of will power. Some people can quit smoking from one day to the next just because they decide to do so (or loose weight) and some try every trick in the book and never make it. Same here. For me it depends on what I am reading, if it is holding my interest then distractions won't matter. If it is slightly boring, then I will be happily distracted.

It holds for me - I don't read fiction on my iPad - too restless.

I used to find the selective mute option on my iPad to be useless. Now it's indispensable, since it silences notifications. They still pop out at the top, but those are fairly easy to tune out compared to the alerts in earlier versions of iOS.
