So far I'm not very tempted to upgrade. I tend to get a new computer every 3-4 years, but that's mostly to keep up with new software, though I'm always happy to get a better performing machine. I don't see the same motivations to upgrade a reader. The only thing I want to add on my reader is more books, and if I ever need more room I'll just delete the old ones. Of course, better speed and a touch screen would be a plus, but they are not essential to the experience of reading. I'll be happy to get them when I buy a new reader, but I don't think I will buy a new reader just to get them. Or at least I'll wait until I get a few years' use out of the current one.

Well, I just started with e-readers a few years ago, but in general I like to upgrade electronic stuff every chance I get if it's worthwhile. What I'll do is update and sell the old one, or maybe give it to someone I know. But if I sell it for a fair amount (and I usually keep electronics in perfect shape), it usually makes the new one really cost effective I've concluded. Meaning percentage-wise, over the years I really end up paying the same or just a little more overall as I would having to throw a really old one away without selling it years later and buy a new one, plus I get a new one every year or so by doing it my way.
Well, that's the way I like to do it. In reality, sometimes I don't bother, and then sometimes I feel the newest models are worse so I keep my old one. Like, I still have the Sony 950 Reader because I think the newer Sonys don't seem as good. I also still have the fat iPod nano from like four years ago because I like its shape much better than the skinny ones or the more recent too-small ones (but I really have to give in and get a new one soon...it's getting too old and is missing new features I want!). So I'd say overall I end up upgrading every chance I get about half the time. Last edited by sun surfer; 01-19-2012 at 03:20 PM. |

Since I'm still using my Sony PRS-505 -- my first "real" reader, I'm going to say that no, I don't updgrade my devices for new ones.
![]() I do have a Kindle 3 (w/keyboard) because I wanted a second device to leave in my computer bag all of the time, but I don't think that was so much an upgrade (the screen is much nicer!) as it was a convenient addition. I would not replace my PRS-505 with a Kindle -- except for the screen contrast and battery life, I think that my Sony continues to be a better device. |
