If the book's only available in a paper version, and I want to read it badly enough, then absolutely.
If it's a price issue (if the ebook is too much for me, or costs more than the paper book) I usually either skip it or get it at the library. |

I just bought a couple of DTB's this morning at the used book store. They're going to be temporary jackets for the Kindle Fires that my daughters got for Christmas.
I may never buy another DTB again. I've been purely digital with music for nearly ten years, with books for nearly two years, and if hard drives had dropped in price over the last two years, instead of increasing like they have, I would have all my DVD's burned over to watch through my xBox. To me, not only is it a matter of convenience, it is a way to reduce waste and clutter. |

Yes, especially when the paper book is less than half that of the ebook. Any book I really like or one that is part of a series, I like to have in paper.. I like books and I like to be able to lend one to a friend or family member to try a new author..

The day I first heard about the Compact Disk system was the day I bought my last vinyl record. No more of the ritual of playing a disk - taking it out, cleaning it, putting it on a turntable and knowing that every time I played a record that I was carving a little more life out of it and would never hear it as good again. And then the ritual of cleaning the disk, storing it etc.etc.
I was not quite so drastic about changing to ebooks - it took two or three days to go from "skeptic but thought I ought try it" to addict and proselytizer for ebooks. Now we watch the legacy dead tree publishers in their death march to the tar pits, trying to preserve their traditional business model at all costs. They publish history - but clearly they have not learned from it. And no, I will never buy another paper novel or likely any other paper book. Cheers |

There are types of books that don't transition well to digital: art books, coffee-table books, novelty books of various sorts (pocket books of quotes, 1" square tiny-text classics), many kinds of children's books (pop-ups, books with texture or cutouts), certain kinds of manuals and reference books. Workbooks. Memento books for tourists. Special-event books: convention schedule books with space available to have them signed by various authors. And so on. If everything else collapses, there'll still be demand for these kinds of books--the way that the saddle-and-riding-crop industry hasn't vanished; it's just gotten a lot smaller.
Some other books are currently best in print because ebook formatting hasn't caught up to their needs: many textbooks, poetry, hymnals and other songbooks, thesaurus & several other types of reference books, magazines--anything that needs either precision formatting or flipping back and forth a lot. I assume that eventually, these will work well on portable devices, but it'll take quite a while, and more large-screen devices that work as efficiently for ebooks as the current e-ink devices. For now, however, they're much better in print. But for leisure reading... paper was used because it was the cheapest medium available. And it no longer is. I am so glad my leisure-reading budget can now be squeezed as low as it needs to, and I can limit paper book-buying to those nonfiction items I either want as permanent reference works or to enjoy the art. |

Would I ever buy another paper book? Sure I would. I still like having paper copies of my favorite books sitting on my bookshelf. I feel like when people look at my bookshelf, in a way they see me, who I am and what I'm all about, all in a glance.
I know, I'm wierd ![]() |

I am somewhat handicapped.

Paper novels - nope! Stopped buying them years ago, long before eReading.
Other paper books - oh yeah! Not everything is suited for eReaders. |

At my age, I'm trying to reduce my stacks, so others won't be left with that burdon. I won't buy any more fiction or non-reference paper books, and frequently buy e-versions replacements of books already in my library. I have sad memories of older relatives who found themselves in tiny spaces, such as nursing homes, with no room at all for their personal belongings. We are very lucky, and will be able to have all our books, music, photographs, movies, etc in a space no bigger than the Kleenex box on their bedside tables. And with a kindle we won't even need wifi. Last edited by Victoria; 01-01-2012 at 11:10 AM. |

Yes. I buy and read both regularly.
Most of my fiction reading is ebooks - but not all of it. I still buy lots of game books, reference books and graphic novels in print. For me the electronic format was an expansion, not an alternative. |
