I guess that's partly the reason I can read for hours on my iPhone/iPod Touch but not on the iPad. Much smaller screen real estate.
Yes, the backlight wouldn't change. I even got the impression that the new iPad was brighter than my iPad 2, could that be because my iPad 2 is a few months old? Or maybe that was just my imagination.

At first I never thought I'd like to read with the iPad, but I find I use it exclusively for all my books. It's nice to have access to all the Kindle, Nook & misc. free books, and I use the Bluefire app for Kobo books. Haven't used my other devices in about a year.

I'm surprised how much I enjoy reading on my new iPad and it's wonderful having apps for both Kobo and Kindle on one device. I returned my Kobo Vox for a Kobo Touch because it hurt my eyes but this hasn't been the case with the my new iPad.

A fringe benefit of having both a dedicated ereader and an iPad is that I can now share books with my book club friend simply by trading devices. She has an iPad and a Kindle. FYI - It's not the iPads that we exchange!

I gave up on eink long time ago and read on my iPad 1. I adore Stanza. Most of my 'reading' is done on my iPhone as I prefer audiobooks on long drives and daily walks. Am planning to go back to paper books and finish reading Proust after listening to first two volumes as audiobooks.

My Opus is dying, and I am not sure I will buy a new e-ink reader. I find that using a combination of iPhone (on the train) and iPad (at home), with iBooks synchronizing between them, works quite well so far. Drawbacks are short battery life, but I must recharge these devices every couple of days anyway whether I use them for reading or not, and the difficulty of reading outside, but it's not something I do very often. So it may work. We'll see.

Initially I loved my Kindle 3 Keyboard, but when I broke that after 3 weeks of use on a holiday trip (imagine the despair: having loaded all those books and not being able to read them) I switched to the iPad and was impressed by how well it went.

Nevertheless, since I have my Kindle Fire I mainly use that as the form factor is more practical. But I do use the iPad, or my iPod touch if I need to and make sure to load new eBooks to all three devices as a provision (e.g. if my kids are using the Kindle Fire for watching videos and the iPad for playing games).
OK, now that I have another Kindle 3 Keyboard (and a sturdy cover to keep it safe), I am again amazed at how nice an e-ink reader is for reading, despite the lower resolution (compared to the Kindle Fire), the smaller screen (compared to the iPad) and the need of a lamp to read by.

The Kindle Fire only gets used when I want to read late at night without disturbing my wife. Hmm.

Best regards,
Andy

I generally only read comics, manga and PDFs (academic reading) on my iPad. I find it a bit heavy for prolonged use, and I find the screen a bit uncomfortable to read on for long stretches of time. I do think that the iPad 3 would be much more pleasant to read on - I find my iPhone much more easy to read on than the iPad. I still vastly prefer eink for reading.

I don't mind reading using my iPad. I have a book going on the iPad and a book going on my 650.
