I totally agree, too! Shopping addiction is a vice most comparable to other vices like alcohol, drugs or gambling.

I also can only use one ereader at a time. I still have my prs-300 but I never use it anymore. Haven't used it in over a year now. I get quite attached to my readers so I can only comfortably read on one. Right now I'm in a monogamus releationship with my Kindle.

As an author, I have several eReaders so that I can test the formatting of each of the books I have written on the various different devices. This way I can make sure that the reader (regardless of the device brand) has a consistent reading experience.

It is true that owning multiple eReaders is not very useful to most people and I don't think there can be a logical explanation for owning 4-6 readers at a time for non-professional reviewers.

But if you've ever been an enthusiast in any field, you know that sometimes you just want to review a device yourself rather than reading one written by someone else. I know people that have 6-10 smart phones (bought off contract) just to play around with.

Some people like to spend their money on luxury goods, others on electronics, others on traveling, so there will be naturally who spend on e-readers!

I have to admit that when I first joined MR, I was surprised by how many posters had multiple e-readers listed as their device. I still don't quite get it since you can only read on one e-reader at a time. If I get a new electronic gadget, I usually sell or give away the older one because there isn't a purpose in keeping it. When I brought my iPod Touch, I gave away my nano to my mother, who in turn gave it to my niece.

I have a Sony PRS-350 at the moment. I had a Nook first edition previously and I gave that to my mother so that she could auction it off for charity. I really don't have a need for multiple e-readers. I have to admit that when Sony release the PRS-T1, that I really wanted to buy it. However, when I think about it, there really is no reason to buy the T1. Yes, it has wi-fi but my 350 works just fine and I haven't even had it for a year. IMO, it would be wasteful to buy three e-readers in a year. I kinda thought it was wasteful to buy two but the Sony is a much better reader than the Nook classic and the Nook classic is being sold for a good cause. That helps assail my guilt somewhat but I don't want to consume too much.

Some people don't carry objects with them all the time. Instead, they have another one of whatever it is wherever they are likely to need one. Hence there is a pair of scissors on my desk, another on my wife's desk, yet another pair in the bathroom, a pair in one of the kitchen drawers, another pair in the bedroom with my wife's craft stuff, and one more pair in the first aid kit. We never have trouble finding the scissors because they never walk off. There is a pair where they are needed, thus seldom a need to take them elsewhere.

While we haven't just run out and bought an ereader for every place we might sit and read, we keep all our old ones when we upgrade and are working towards having a reader handy wherever we might be in the house.

We will have one ereader one of these days. It takes time to standardize. Remember VHS, and other format Beta or something like this and PC and Mac felt like from a different planet. Patience my friend.

Are people like Phogg joking about comparing having multiple e-readers in multiple locations like scissors? Last I checked you just stash scissors somewhere. You don't have to sync your e-books or remember placements, keep it charged, etc. Having multiple e-readers so increases the time you spend managing the extra devices, that it does not save time compared to walking to a different place in your house. You are inventing a fictional meta-narrative to support your gadget addiction.

The Mobileread forums really need a support forum for people who think they need so many readers and who buy too many books they cannot get around to reading.

The latter was such a huge problem for me until becoming unemployed finally forced me to utilize the library more. I just got to a point where I couldn't afford to keep buying books that I 1) didn't need and 2) didn't read. Now that I borrow just about all of my books from the library, if I don't read a book, it's no harm, no foul. It simply goes back to the library and more money stays in my pocket. Plus, I'm not contributing to over-consumption. Even my husband is doing this now (even though he reads all the books he buys). I've noticed him borrowing more and more books from the library lately.
