Finally an e-ink device designed for the bathroom. The Paper Scale!

http://www.yankodesign.com/index.php...9/paper-scale/

This was bound to happen but Duck Image Studio is the first (that we know of) to apply paper electronic technology to a scale. The ultra thin flexible scale combines a pressure sensing sheet that relays information to an e-paper display. It’s waterproof, easy to clean, and can be rolled up for storage.

In this particular example the technology is kept small in the form of a traditional scale but imagine a large bath mat or even floor tiles. Of course I’m not sure I’d want to know how much I weighed every time I stepped into the bathroom. This thing will only further solidify Americans are overweight and dammit I’m not ready to deal with my weight issues. Now excuse me while I eat my morning cinnamon bun.

But my weight is in PDF format (Plump, Doughy and Fat). Will it display that correctly? And would I want it to?

So, I want to know - what happens if you run out of loo paper? I know it means desecrating a much loved book, but you can always use the pages you've already read. You're gonna have a job explaining to the library assistant of course. That's gonna be a bit difficult with a piece of hardware. So, what about some built in moister wipes which we could keep in a pocket of our electronic reader's cover - just in case [no pun intended]. We could also keep one of those pine-scented smelly things in there.

Also, JS, I want to know where that little buddy of yours [the bookworm] sits when you're using your electronic reader in the loo. I hope you find a nice comfy seat for him out of harm's way.

What I love are the public toilets with two doors where one door opens inward, the other outward. Means that you must touch at least one handle. Surely making them both push-to-exit would be more sensible.

I take my liseuse into the toilet, but I do cover it before I wipe & flush. I also put the cover down before I flush because flushing aerosolises the contents of the bowl and I don't like that. But if you're worried about hygene, the kitchen is a much more risky place. There's a lot more nasty stuff in kitchens (more people get sick from it too), especially if you are misfortunate enough to share it with meat eaters.

I do wipe my liseuse down with methanol every week or two when I'm cleaning my camera lenses. Not so much for hygene as for fingerprint removal.

A little warning to you that methanols crystallise plastics such as the device's paint and the exterior protector of the eink screen. And that's not saying anything of the ravages it could do on the inside components when the liquid migrates in by capillarity. Mild dishwashing detergent soap (the kind used in the sink not the dishwasher )will do wonders in the most delicate way needed. Just lightly dip a rag in the liquid before doing a load of dishes, when the water is clean, preferably, making sure that it is only damp not wet. Clean the smeared areas and as soon as you're done, towel to dryness. And do not forget the dishes to start reading again, your tender half would find ways to make your pride pay for it.

Blimey, you lot spend a lot of time in the loo!

I'm in and out personally - I have a back problem so sitting on the toilet for longer than the necessary is not an option!

I was having a discussion with a friend the other day about reading while soaking in the bath strangely enough - I've seen that you can get waterproof pockets for our beloved devices, but I haven't bothered with that either - I get in, wash top to toe and get out again.

Basically, I use the 'conveniences' for their purpose, I do all the enjoyable stuff in the bedroom

Oh, and just for the record, my kids and I call my cybook my ebook

Your needs are opposite mine. I go there as a refuge from family life. It is the only sacred place incensed by natural repellents where I will not stand to be bothered.

I saw a streetwise maxim in a public loo somewhere that you might know and that would join all styles: "Some people come here to sit and think. Others come to shit and stink!

Tut, when I'm on the loo or on the phone seems to be the only time my kids speak to me!

LOL, hopefully you're reading before you do the... err...., well, you know. IMO, that's just as sanitary as reading it anywhere else, unless you're afraid of airborn germs, or you wash your hands before you handle your reader.

Wow, just chiming in, that's the best place to read for me. There's often been times when I've had to look at the clock and go, whoops, gotta shower now. I think it's even better than a laptop with wireless.
