I always start a series from book 1 and I hate authors that release books in the middle of the series timeline or prequels. I usually skip prequels if they are released after I have started a series.
If I am starting a new series and it already has a few books I first check the timeline and look around at what is the best recommended reading order before I commit to it. |

speaking of book series, brian herbert molests his fathers legacy yet again this january
![]() http://www.amazon.com/Sisterhood-Dun...neral_recs_118 i'll buy it but i won't be happy about it. *shakes fist* i think dune may be the only series with new books that take place between the events of other books. Last edited by xg4bx; 10-10-2011 at 08:12 AM. |

I read 5-10 books a week so I put yes if I can afford it.
I rely heavily on the library as I have always done and I reserve books in series order if possible but there are only 5 holds allowed at my library. I do buy books, but my disposable income is not high (retirement looming and savings more important) If I see a book I haven't read that is available and sounds interesting I get it even if it is number 14. Especially an unfamiliar author. Then I know if I am interested in reading the whole series. Lucky for me most series I enjoy do not contain spoilers or rely heavily on knowledge of back plot. And if times are tough I will read almost anything ![]() Helen |

Prequels can be OK, if the writer does them right.
At least one of the Lee Child - Jack Reacher series is a prequel. It works well. |
