Same here. I don't "hate" it, I just don't have a use for it. Maybe it's because I spend much of the day in front of a computer screen at work, and therefore have access to my email all day (as well as in the evening when I check it).
For that matter, I don't use my cell phone that much. It's usually not even switched on. I have it for emergencies, primarily. I guess I prefer a less "interrupt-driven" lifestyle. Come to think of it, I'd just as soon get a text message as a phone call, if someone had to reach me while I'm away from my desk. It would be cheaper and less intrusive. |

As I said in an earlier message, most teenagers here seem to be SMS-fanatics, because they generally don't have much money, and SMS messages are a lot cheaper than phone calls. |

The cell plan we are on does not include SMS. But we can receive SMS without any charge. It's just that sending SMS does cost. Then again, if someone isn't at his/her phone, I prefer to leave voicemail.
On plublic transport, the noisiest people are the kids who sit there in groups with there SMS capable smart phone type phones. |

Interesting thread. Up until 5 years ago, I'd neither sent nor received a text (SMS) message. Then my daughter bought her first mobile phone, and well, the rest is fairly predictable. She's now 14, and texting is her normal way of keeping in touch.
Interestingly though, nowadays much of my work is also conducted by text, to some extent at least. Many people (of all ages, but particularly 20s - 40s) seem to prefer it to email; it's just another way of communicating, arranging meetings or fine-tuning details that don't need direct or lengthy discussion. I could probably live without it, but I wouldn't want to. Mobile Opportunity did a column a while back about US vs Euro phone usage; well worth a read - as if there isn't enough to read already ![]() Good weekend, Pete. |
