Regardless of personal preference, the Nook Color was a smashing success in terms of sales, and really outflanked Amazon.
This is their answer to it. I just think it's a shame it seems to be worse than the Nook Color and they don't have an answer to the iPad, which is more important in the long run. Lots of people who were on the fence have no doubt given up waiting for a mythical Amazon 10" tablet sometime in a future, and bought either an iPad or android (or will this Holiday). |

If this is anyway true then Amazon will have dropped a bollock IMHO.
I will rather play with my 7" Archos that cost a mere £120 and is rooted, has 8gb on board plus SD expansion, has onboard Kindle as well as proper video, music and web accessibility. I don't want a Nook clone, or a iPad wannabe........for me less is more and I would have rather seen improvements in the software on the Kindle than all this. |

For me, no-one has mentioned the big reason to like the e-ink Kindle over say, an iPad, as an e-reader: distractions. I used my iPad as a reader before I bought a Kindle and it was great. But it was far too distrating to have emails buzzing in every 2 mins, or if I read about a name in a book and thought "I wonder who that is", it was too easy to jump to Safari and look them up, then end up spending ages on the web. Or if you get to a slightly boring chapter of a book it was too easy to say "sod this, I'm gonna stop reading and play Angry Birds".
The big thing for me is the Kindle is, to all intents and purposes, a book. A tablet is a computer/gadget that can be used for reading books. Subtle but important difference if you ask me. |

I don't think I will dump my iPad for this, but I do like what it sounds like they are doing. |

If that's correct, then apparently people are only willing to buy a 7 inch EBR if there is some perceived added value. That value, it seems to me, is primarily color plus, to a lesser extent, touch and perhaps a better navigation interface. |

But this is not a tablet. This is Amazon-in-your-Pocket for $171, taking into account Prime. I think a whole lotta people are going to get this. Last edited by Harmon; 09-05-2011 at 10:46 PM. |

I agree. If this comes with Prime and free video - it'll reach a whole difference audience who are perhaps more casual readers but avid video watchers/music players.
Personally, I'm not in the market for one (I have a Kindle & iPad already) but I can see why others would be. |

People are confusing themselves.
It is a lot easier to judge things if you at least attempt to put aside prejudice.
The Kindle, the Nook, the Ipad and all the other devices including my 23 inch desktop, and 15 inch notebook make it easier to get, read and store books and other reading matter. Isn't that what this forum is all about. I look forward to comparing the Kindle Color with a touch screen and the Nook Color 2. I love my Kindle 3G as far as reading goes but navigation is a real pain. A touch screen would be much easier to use but it will add nothing to the reading experience. On another subject. I don't believe this so called cloud storage and experience is going to be all the sellers are claiming it will be. Unless you are paying the cellular companies through the nose for their data services, you won't be able to touch the clouds all the time. WiFi is not always available. I like ample device storage, and frankly, I have envied the Nook crowd for having it with their extra SD card storage. |

One other thing. Just yesterday, I went in a BAM store and happened to look at their Nook display since I am now in the market and I wanted a new look at the current Nooks.
Unfortunately the "new" Nook gray scale ($139) was discharged and when I attempted to hook it up where I thought it would have power, the alarm went off, so the clerk came over, apologized for the lack of a charge, then went to the back of the store to put it on a charger and to cut off the alarm. I never got to put the Nook gray scale through its paces. I do know now that the new Nook gray scale is a neat smaller tablet than the Kindle 3 and has a virtual keyboard (when it is charged). Those two attributes make me want to try it. It appeared from the information there that it and the current Nook Color does not have a browser (internet) like the Kindle but that they might be getting one. Some feedback on the browser situation would be welcome. |

It's a tablet. They can market it however they want, but we know what category of device it is so it's not really our problem how they choose to market it. It may be a toned down tablet, in the same way a $500 budget laptop and a $1500 gaming laptop are both laptop computers.

The Techcrunch article said a lot while saying almost nothing other than the prize, size, and "omg the OS is so different." We haven't seen the OS. We haven't seen the display. We don't know about its processing specs. We don't know about its connectivity. We don't have full details regarding its ecosystem perks or if it's closed/open/somewhere inbetween. We don't know jack.
