Mac OSX Lion issues, and possible fix.
Here is the main problem: http://news.softpedia.com/news/NVIDI...e-215493.shtml
It is a serious issue for a new OS on the market. But that's the inevitable result of the hustler's business manner in the industry. Besides being a writer, I have been an IT consultant for the last 20 years. My personal golden rule is: Never buy or upgrade an OS (no mater for Mac or PC) after the release. Wait at least 6 months before doing so. Otherwise prepare for frustrations. And here is some solution to the problem: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4764 Good luck guys ![]() |

@EWGB,
100% right about your waiting's advice. By the way, there is an available patch already. I installed it on my Mac air already. One of the fixes, as per Apple, was the wifi issue I think. |

Thanks for the info, folks. With similar reasoning, I try to apply that to hardware too - I try to wait 6 months to a year (depending on what it is) before buying the new model of whatever. Difficult as that is sometimes, and I often break the rule because I know better but can't resist. Heh.

Uh? There's a blue screen of death on Mac? Last time I had a serious system crash (and that was several years ago as far as I can remember), it was a gray screen. Is that a new Lion feature?

I haven't had any screens of death in Snow Leopard on recent macbookpro or older macbook. iMac, I didn't keep long because my cig smoke fogged the screen due to it's ventilation system sucking air up and through.
As far as I can remember, I haven't *ever* had a system crash in any Mac OS since I got a Mac in 1984. App crashes yes, but almost none with Apple apps. (Edit: not counting alpha or beta testing things.) Last edited by unboggling; 08-18-2011 at 04:38 AM. |

I had system crashes before OSX, more or less frequent depending on the version of the system (some were not very stable), but I don't remember what they looked like. I don't think there was an equivalent to the blue screen of death but there were cases where the system froze or became unusable and had to be restarted by brute force, sometimes by unplugging the power cord.
In early versions of OSX there was a gray screen of death with a message in several languages. There's a name for it but I have forgotten it (kernel failure or something), and as I mentioned I haven't seen it in several years I think. |

Huh. Well I went unMac to a HP PC for a few years, maybe I avoided it during that time, not bothering to upgrade the old Mac's OS.

Kernel panic! How could I forget such a cute name! That's the name of the gray screen of death.

black, blue, gray or whatever, death is a hassle
![]() I've often had long spinning-gear gray screens after I've messed up system files in one way or another in Leopard or Snow Leopard, until going in with disk utilities to fix permissions or whatever, and had to reinstall Snow Leopard once after I'd botched something up I couldn't fix that had slowed startups up considerably. Sure.. no doubts that any Mac OS is much better then Windows. So, any Mac is more reliable then PC and the maintenance is less and easier. Still, so far Mac OS Lion is hard to be called success. This is the only OS X with a such major problem.

The Lion USB stick is available on the Apple store, for 59€ (should be $59 in the US I suppose, too lazy to check). I think the price is a rip-off, but maybe I should have bought that after all instead of the Snow Leopard DVD. Oh well.

$29 for Snow Leopard (seems like on dvd). 2 or 3 weeks shipping. Nope, I think you saved yourself some big headaches. |
