I think that the authors who are building these massive series have figured out that they can make more money by extending the series. I don't buy for a second that GRRM could not have finished this series in a timely fashion and with far fewer books if he wanted to. His publisher and he realized that people will drool over the release of the next book and buy whatever he puts out and so they are milking it.
I have developed more respect for the Jim Butcher's of the world who put out a good product on a regular basis and stick to their deadlines. While Dresden is not as complex as GRRM world it is still a good read and I can rely on the author and the Publisher to get it out on a regular basis. I am comfortable investing in Butcher. I don't mind gritty. I like gritty. I will probably end up reading the rest of this series but I am not buying any more of his books as long as he is playing games and extending deadlines and the series for something that strikes me as far less than artistic in nature. More likely then not I will borrow the book from a friend when they are done and not buy it. GRRM hacked me off 5 years ago and has done little to win me back. |

I think that's the danger an author faces when waiting too long with the next release. People will have moved on to something else and will probably not be in a hurry to get back.

GRRM is big enough that his book will do well without me and the few folks like me. Which is the way that the market is suppose to work. He did a good enough job with the first bunch of books and enough people are enjoying the HBO series that he can get away with taking forever in putting out books. In many ways he has earned that privlage. He knows that the die hard fans will be waiting no matter what.

I would disagree with that.
There are references to rape (and slavery, and torture, and other forms of medieval unpleasantness), but they are not graphic, for the most part, and never salacious. And you're talking about a series that is thousands of pages long at this point. |

FYI for people that were waiting for it in the library. It was available in my local library last night. I lucked out because there wasn't a waiting list and I was able to sign it out right away.

So "luck out" doesn't mean "out of luck", but the opposite? That seems a little non-intuitive
