How un-enjoyable. I have a touch 4 and don't use its social features (email, texting, Twitter, etc). So no reminders, no pop ups, and no notifications. Nothing to interfere with my streaming and audiobooks.

Regarding multi-purpose devices - don't forget that CPUs are getting more "abilities" too.
Take a look at this CPU - unless I'm mistaken, that should be the one inside the Kobo Wifi. At least it's the same family.

Sooner or later you probably can't even buy a CPU that doesn't have MP3 and whatever else integrated.

Of course, you can ignore that and don't use it. But I doubt that would be cost-efficient, as you're still paying for them.

(Also of course, it's a chicken/egg situation. But once in motion, I doubt it will be stopped any time soon. Perhaps other architectures are different, but then I suppose there's a reason why ARM is widely used.)

Personally, I welcome multi-purpose devices - as long as they have a dedicated use and the rest is mere "extra".
I wouldn't mind not carrying an MP3 player for example.

Re: Keyboards - there've been rollable keyboards too. Maybe that would be useful? Bluetooth or whatever, so you can place wherever you have room, and foldable/rollable to store it.

Here's an example.

[edit] Ah drat, might as well say a word on topic: eReaders are cheaper and smaller, no wonder they sell better.

This just seems such a bogus issue.
How exactly is there more 'distraction' when I'm reading on my NC vs an eInk device?
I'm reading a book. The system does nothing to distract me. The only things that ever interrupt me are a low battery warning, and a late-night warning that I've specifically asked for.
Are we really such an ADD society that the mere fact that a device could be doing something else is distracting?

precisely. Even the slowest cpu's on market today for ereaders all have more than power to spare for side tasks such as this while it sits there idle waiting for the user to turn the page. Doesn't even consume much power: I can listen to music all day long without a significant hit on batery life, as it doesn't need screen nor networking. May slightly increase device price for inclusion of a DAC and earphone port, but having a customized wall of soundtrack might help some easily distracted folks...

Yes like occasionally phoning with a smartphone...

They got cheaper after ipad was bought to market, otherwise people would obviously go for most-bang-for-the-buck, including comfortable magazine, comics and PDF reading.

Yes.

BTW, FBReader on android uses full-screen. No distractions on sight, nor tempting angry birds icons. At most, the brief sound of incoming message notification, if you didn't turn plane mode on.

That's not really what I was picturing. I was more picturing a tablet with an internal projector. The tablet could come with a stand similar to the one for the iPad, so that when it's tilted at a certain angle, you could trigger the projector to beam on to the flat surface.
You have to admit that what I was picturing is funnier.
