Right, but the OP has a K3, thus my response.

I only read DRM-free books that I store in my installation of Calibre. I never buy from Amazon, so I can't use Whispersync. Whenever I want to get a new book I email it directly from Calibre to my device.

Any book that Calibre converts to .mobi (including a mobi->mobi conversion) will synchronise furthest page read across devices. Calibre seamlessly adds the necessary metadata during the conversion.

I realize this thread is about the "email" feature particularly, but I'll point out to all the 3G-only owners that there is, as far as I can tell, no charge for downloading documents via the Kindle web browser, even over 3G.
So you can get your books via Calibre's content server, or any web host, or if you have web-based email, you can email yourself documents, and download them to the Kindle by accessing your mail via the browser. For services like GMail, this is actually easier on the K2 browser than on the K3. For me, by the way, I use wifi email delivery of books almost exclusively now. I haven't plugged my Kindle in to a computer in recent memory. As I have no interest in paying for a smartphone data plan right now, I also use the Kindle to get my regular email and other minor Internet tasks done while on the road. The Internet feature was one of the main selling points of the Kindle for me. ApK |

I use the email to my Kindle feature to be completely lazy. I'm living in a very large 2 story house. The kindle travels all over the building. My PC is in the corner of my bedroom. I email files to my kindle rather than carrying it "all the way" back to the corner bedroom for a USB connection.
I also email blogs to my Kindle using Calibre. |

I've used my Kindle browser with Gmail quite a bit (since Yahoo Mail doesn't work), but I didn't realize I could actually download an attachment to my Kindle....really? ![]() |

The same way you can directly download docs right from the library here on MR or Project Guttenberg, etc. On the K2 browser, gmail presents simple direct links to the attachments, so it works smoothly. On the K3, Gmail tries to be fancy and open attachment in another window, which the Kindle won't do, so I have to access my Gmail through a proxy like skweezer.com, or presumably you use one of the hacks that work around the multiple window issue. ApK p.s. Note, as more people do this, and Amazon sees higher 3G costs, there is always the risk that they will block this "experimental" feature. Just saying. Thanks I wouldn't worry about too many people doing this. Amazon has sold upwards of 12 million Kindles and the entire membership of the forum here, including all ereaders, is just over 122,000. If we all did this it would be about 1% of the web traffic. I really don't see them getting upset other than on a case by case basis. Last edited by chas0039; 06-26-2011 at 02:17 PM. |
