I took my Kindle for a day at the beach. Had it in a plastic bag with a zip (ziploc?) thrown to backpack. Reading at the beach was great. No sand whatsoever, no problems.

FWIW, we did research in the Antarctic and camped for 5 weeks. One member of our group had a Kindle while another member had a Sony Reader. Both e-readers worked fine the entire time.

Ahh. I was wondering about sand across the screen. However, its another thing to worry about when you go for a swim!

There are water proof covers for Kindles. I have one that I use when I am at the beach. Then again, I don't take my Kindle into the water when I am swimming and normally dry off before reading again. If I was on a canoe I would put the kindle in a water proof bag and a water proof stuff sack. Double the protection.

I dropped mine on its back on the grass after shooting this picture. Luckily it only chipped a bit on the top left. Nothing else, I'll probably forget about it.
![]() ![]() It did hold up in the 99 F heat though. |

It was in the Antarctic spring. Most electrical items do fine for short periods if the temps are above -10 C. Plus, the e-readers were used inside our tents, not outdoors. The devices were stored in coolers with bottles of warm water overnight, along with any other electrical items, like laptops.
The Kindle is fairly robust as long as it doesn't get wet. Humidity, of course, is a non-issue in the Antarctic since the relative humidity is so very low. (It's drier than the Sahara Desert.) You would have to worry about using a Kindle in the cold in other places because of condensation. |
