Real reason: I like to travel with a few of my favorite books (they are comforting). With my Nook, I have my whole library! I also really don't usually enjoy reading adult fiction (usually too graphic) and feel a bit embarrassed to be seen reading teen or children's books in public.

It's the gadget factor, definitely. But it is nice to always have a whole library in my pocket.

I suppose I do feel a bit more comfortable reading YA and SF without flashing the often ridiculous cover art, though I do most of my reading around the house, anyway.

I used to read on generations of Palm Treo's, which I had as telephone and PA.
I bought the first ereader when e-ink started. I got caught from the publicity, I think, with the excuse of long lasting charge, and the slick look. Spoiler:
I am glad with 3 readers for a variety of different situations. |

I got my first Treo to have the calendar with the appointments (still the best), the Todo list, the shopping list, the mail on the go, the database for DVD and cellar management, the chess player, the music, the calculator, the phrase book in German, the web, word processors and excel, the phone, the modem, ... Then came ereader. Last but certainly not the least. ![]() |

Now I remember. My official excuse for getting the PDA was that I needed it to finish my master's thesis. The real reason was to read books and use it as a portable music player.

Stop being paranoic, there is no other secret reason. I just enjoy a read from time to time and I also love going with the technology so there you have it.

In my case I am sure it had nothing to do with technology. I was pretty much sceptical about being able to enjoy reading a book by using a gadget vs. holding my beloved hard back editions. Initially, I bought Sony Reader PRS-500 for an occasional reading, such as travelling. Although I am IT technician, I am not a gadget man, I don't enjoy the toys unless they are useful. So, I never dreamed that I was going to fall in love with the ebook reader. It was a profound surprise to me (I am not fan of surprises, because it means I am not in control of the situation and I am a control freak

I like to travel light: usually just my backpack. An ereader made sense because I can take as many books as I want with me. Prior to the ereader I would only have space for one or two books and would have to buy books at my destination. (It can be hard to find English language book stores in many foreign countries.)

Well I saw that the Sony 350 was £111 just like the kindle in waterstones, I wanted it.
I asked the sales assistant about it and said "how long is that offer on?", he said it was "probably going to be finished and is only on because of mothers day" which I was dubious about because he also said it had only been on for a week (when I knew it hadn't because I had been drooling over it for month). Btw it's still on offer!!!! So the "reason" I got it is because someone gave me the "hard sell". The real reason is: I wanted it. The other reason is: I accidentally broke my old Cybook. Anyway since it was as cheap as the kindle I splashed out on the case with light and never looked back. Sure Kindle can download books much faster and with much more ease but I have a feeling that might lend to me buying things for the sake of it. Although since I got my reader I have bought more paper copies, mainly because I bookcross at a meeting every month (you can't cross with an ebook, well you could if everyone else had readers). |

i'm another one whose main reason was space - our entire apartment was (and mostly still is) filled with books. our shelves have double rows of them.
the other reason, although not sure it's a secret, was that when i finished a book at any time, i could grab the sequel and be reading it in a couple minutes ![]() |
