Right back at ya!

I was lost looking at listings online. How do you even begin to search for a new home? Newspaper? Hire a realtor?

We are pretty set on a condo in the Ft. lauderdale area.

other amenities (such as your monster fireplace)

I second that. The folks I met around Seattle and Bremerton were some of the nicest and most welcoming folks I've ever met, and the scenery is beautiful. Downsides: mudslides, earthquakes, and a volcano in their backyard that's overdue for a major eruption.

My wife's folks come from Kingsport, Tennessee. It's a friendly place with moderate climate and a reasonable cost of living; plus I think you'd like its Southern Hospitality.

Then the hardest work is behind you. You may not think so, but it is.

Step #2 is go to the area and tour it. Get in a car and drive around. get a feel for the "lay of the land". Where are the mansion zones? Where are the slums (every town has slums.) What level (between the two extremes) fits you sense of "place".

Step #3 - contact a Realtor and see what places like what you want cost. Can you afford them?

Step #4 - pick out the individual place, buy, and live happily ever after....

Many people rent for 6 months while doing step #2 and early step #3. Check the rental market for apartments and condos for rent. Given the current state of the real estate market in Florida, that shouldn't be too hard.

(And for the Step #4, learn to speak Spanish and New Yorker...)
