Here's the PRS-350 prototype case (with a genuine handcrafted PRS-350 inside...)

I'm getting access to a full woodshop this weekend, so will be making mockups of the PRS-650, PRS-950, and Nook

That looks good to me. I like the Oberon make over posted by Poppaea too but I also like the simplicity of the one you created. It looks like my m-edge cover I have on my Nook & Kindle.

Hey, I'd like to chime in here as a user who's very interested in your work so far... it looks great!

I have a PRS-950.. any chance you'll be making a case for that model?

Why? Because it's the only one I've found with a built-in reading light. I do most of my reading in bed at night and have a (purely personal) aversion to the numerous clip-on lights available, so I want a cover that incorporates a light. I know I'm probably in a very small minority, but it still seems like a market opportunity for someone.
This is EXACTLY how I feel... The only thing I like about the default 950 lighted case is the fact that it has a light. But even then, I feel like the case is wider and heavier than it needs to be... There is a whole space of what appears to be hollow plastic above the battery, and why use a AAA battery? Couldn't a single superbright LED with a button battery work? It's not unheard of: (link).

hmcurriers, whats your opinion about this? Is this something you could possibly address, regarding a lighted case?

BTW: I'm paying for this case. Sometimes you get a reviewer's copy of a thing, but the company rep then pressures you to write something flattering and gets angry with you if you criticize their product. That has happened with audiophile equipment in the past and I'd rather not go through it here.
I look forward to your review. Thanks.

The x50 Sony Readers all have the holes for the cover to be connected to. This is why I don't like the straps as they just get in the way. If you could make covers using the cover connecter holes on the readers, I'd be happy to recommend your covers when someone posts about looking for a cover.

Not having seen a Sony case in detail, are the connectors magnetised?

I am still a bit concerned about magnets so close to the ereader. That concern though, is tempered by the fact my Kobo cover has a magnetised closure.

On the Sony covers, there's a thin strip of metal apparently in the flaps of the cover. The Sony reader itself is magnetized in the 2 outer corners, not the cover or even the pins. Hold something metallic like a fingernail file near the upper and lower edge of the reader on the right hand side and you'll feel the pull.

Ahh, thanks!

Well if they can be made like the Sony covers and with a closure, then a winner has arrived

That's interesting! Ok, quick question.... does anyone prefer straps over the sony-style pins? If there's not a great interest, I'll go ahead and make all of the covers w/ the pins (which will speed up the prototyping!)

I would be happy for you to go with the pins. I will try and swallow what is remaining of my doubt. The one great improvement in that regard to the Sony cover will be the ability to close the cover and keep it closed.

I just bought a 350 on eBay, so will be working out the corner pins soon!

I think the pins would be prefered by most, but need to be very exact to get it to fit right.

As for using metal in the cover to close the case, like on the original Sony. I'm not sure wheter regular metal or rare earth magnets will produce the best result.

The original cases rely on the magnetism in the sony's themselves, but do they have it paired with some special metal or will any metal do?

I like the pins myself. My other 2 reader (Kindle3 & Nook) covers use straps, but I really prefer the pins.
