I would buy one, if I didn't already own a Kindle and if the devs had already gotten around to "fixing" the firmware to get rid of the ads. Amazon might be hoping to create a new economics ecosystem with their devices but all I want is something to read on. Where I send my monies to is a very personal decision.

It's difficult for me to envision a situation in which this would happen. Not in the foreseeable future. The only way I might see it happening is if it was sold by a wireless company on a two-year contract for the 3G version. That might happen at some point, but I don't think dedicated e-readers are big enough sellers right now for the wireless companies to get into the act.

This is what happened to Hulu. When is started it was the greatest thing since sliced bread; watch your tv and you get like 2 commercials during the whole show and they are 7-10 seconds long.

Now you watch Hulu and there are almost as many commercial breaks as live tv, there are 2 commercials every break and they are around 19-23 seconds long, and you can't even fast forward. But the killer is they are too short to do anything (go to the bathroom/kitchen).

I bet Amazon has a similar plan.. throw a little animated gif in the middle of your book when you have been reading x amount of time. Not at first mind you, but after the ad versions have become popular. And let others pay for the ad-free versions (Hulu Plus).

I may not be cynical enough, but I would be astonished if Amazon did something that stupid. A book is not a movie. There's no precedent for that kind of interruption in a book. At least with Hulu you have the precedent of commercials on TV. (And I don't actually find Hulu's commercials that egregious. 30 seconds of commercial time beats the 2-3 minutes of commercial time we're usually subjected to.) I can't think of anything that would kill their "special offer" program faster than to dump ads directly into books.

You have to remember: People already have Kindles. If they have any hope at all at getting upgraders, the Kindles actually have to be upgrades. The ad-supported Kindle they're offering now is for people who haven't jumped on board yet. That's almost certainly as intrusive as they can get without making the reading experience suffer. Put ads directly in the books, and you'll push users to one of the competing e-readers.

If they want to go the free route, they can have an ISP or a wireless provider give away the Wifi or 3G versions on contract, but I think if they have any brains at all (which they do seem to have) they'll do just about anything else before they put ads directly in the books.

I receive enough junk mail. I like electronics that do not have the ability to, send junk mail or spam. Amazon gives you a cheaper price, they in turn will reap millions from these deals.

Just IMHO soon that Kindle will be cheaper, and the owner is stuck with the ads.

You get ads more places then just the battery wasting images.

I'd buy it but it's not available in Canada. It's apparently not going to be available here. Probably because the advertising will be US related.

So I figured in for an once in for a pound. or whatever the saying is... I always mess those up... and decided to go for the kindle 3g + wifi.
go for broke! can't take money with you when you die... ok enough with the sayings already ayh...

My fear is that they dangle the carrot with a few decent ads. But as soon as they discover that the idea flies...bam. Ads all over the place.

So no, I don't want to support the idea. Even for a free reader it would be a tough sell to me because I don't like the idea of ads. I know some writers are already talking about putting certain brands in their books and wondering how to make money from it. Geez. I just want to write. Yeah, I know. I need to make a living and so do other writers. But I want to put a Toyota in because it goes with the character. Or an old dodge because it fits the down-on-his luck detective. Or a BMW or Lexus because it works, not because...someone paid me to mention the product.

I can see it now. I agree to write in a Lexus. But then the sponsor gets made because it turns out that the bad guy is driving the Lexus instead of the good guy...

I purchased a Nook for almost twice the price of the Kindle. Two reasons: you could loan books with the Nook which was extremely convoluted at the time with the Kindle, and Overdrive, I get at least half my e-books from the library and Overdrive does not support the Kindle format. $25 off for an ad supported version - not worth it to me.

$49 is the price point that I would consider buying one with the express purpose of digging through the code to identify and bypass the advert port.
But its probably already been examined and a crack has been mapped out by now.

It's great. Kindle device is the one that makes Amazon is in a position to ride the wave of revolution in the print industry. I read this here: Amazon to release ad-supported Kindle for $114. There's nothing wrong if we will take it as a chance to experience the use of Kindle. Besides, being practical is what we need nowadays in order to survive financial crisis.

$25 "discount" to get the annoyance of adds?
NO way!
If it was (considerably) cheaper I would consider.. (it wouldn't be worth more than $49-$89)
Although I almost dare to bet that swapping out the opt folder (or parts of it) from a regular to an add-infested one will cure the little bugger, but time will tell.
Still want a rootFS imgage from the add-infested one, just to mess around with it.
