This is completely unpossible as the current "lending" scheme is a one-time 14 day loan. If I've lent my book once, it's done and cannot be lent again. It could never take the place of Amazon due to this constriction.

HarryT, my understanding was Amazon, at least, only has the lending thing activated in the US, at least from the initiation of the lending.

Quote:
At this time, Kindle book lending can only be initiated by customers residing in the United States. If a loan is initiated to a customer outside the United States, the borrower may not be able to accept the loan if the title is not available in their country due to publisher geographical rights.
This makes the reciprocal sharing aspect tough to do internationally for now.

In theory, in a weird future world, with no restrictions...maybe.

In fact, most of what's available to lend (for nook at least) appears to be (in no particular order): last week's freebies, classics, paranormal romance, Macmillan's popular bestsellers, and erotic novellas.

I'm sure some would continue writing if copyright went away, but many would not. As I've said before, the more people you have writing, the better writing you're going to have (just by the law of averages). It's in our cultural interest to encourage as many people to write as possible.

I'm certainly in favor of modifying copyright, though. I don't see why copyright should outlive the author. If an author wants to provide for his/her heirs, he/she can put the profits from the sale of the book in a bank account, and invest it if he/she thinks it's wise. There's no reason the heirs should be able to milk that cow 70 years after the author is gone.

Actually, that matches my experiences with loaning out paper books, except I don't get it back when I loan it that one time.

Interesting sidelight to the whole lending thing:
http://www.slate.com/id/2289012

Quote:
By my count, just three of the top 10 books in Amazon's Kindle store (as of Tuesday morning) are lendable. Things get worse when you move to the more expensive books on the New York Times bestseller list. Not a single one of the top 10 books on the Times' hardcover fiction list is lendable, and just one of the top 10 books on the nonfiction list can be loaned out—Pope Bendedict's biography of Jesus (and perhaps that's only because he was known to have strong feelings about charity).

Besides limited selection, being able to lend out a book just once total in its lifetime seems to be the big limiting factor for these sites.
