This is completely unpossible as the current "lending" scheme is a one-time 14 day loan. If I've lent my book once, it's done and cannot be lent again. It could never take the place of Amazon due to this constriction.

In fact, most of what's available to lend (for nook at least) appears to be (in no particular order): last week's freebies, classics, paranormal romance, Macmillan's popular bestsellers, and erotic novellas. |

I'm sure some would continue writing if copyright went away, but many would not. As I've said before, the more people you have writing, the better writing you're going to have (just by the law of averages). It's in our cultural interest to encourage as many people to write as possible.
I'm certainly in favor of modifying copyright, though. I don't see why copyright should outlive the author. If an author wants to provide for his/her heirs, he/she can put the profits from the sale of the book in a bank account, and invest it if he/she thinks it's wise. There's no reason the heirs should be able to milk that cow 70 years after the author is gone. |

Interesting sidelight to the whole lending thing:

Besides limited selection, being able to lend out a book just once total in its lifetime seems to be the big limiting factor for these sites. |
