we've already asked you in the Kindle forums to post a link to the story you said you had read. once again, please share a link

I wonder how long this communist system of closed market and artificial scarcity model to inflate prices will last?

yup, that was my point in adding the comment. It's that none of the media seem to be paying attention to that very quiet acquisition by Amazon. They even immediately rolled Touchco into the Kindle division. So to me they were serious in buying the company.

Apparently their tech was really promising at the time and very inexpensive at just $10/sq. yd to produce the touch layers. I also seem to recall what added to the value of their system was the multi-touch capability.

No matter it should be an interesting device and given that Amazon sells a ton of multi-media content along with the core book sales, a slate PC type device seems really reasonable. Not sure it's gonna be a Kindle though, they might branch it a bit so as not to muddy the eink waters of Kindle devices. Unless of course it has a spiffy new EPD type panel in full color. But I have given up on that type of panel happening in the next two years. I'm resigned to a high-res LCD panel instead.

huh? You aren't talking about the Kindle here, right? They are maybe one of the least expensive and high quality devices for reading. Yeah the transflective mono panels are also good. But for sheer ease of use not much rivals the Kindle and it's Kindle Reader app off-spring and price point.

i don't think artificial scarcity is exclusive to just one system

The other thing to consider is it's a lot different to sit at your desk and look at a large screen doing work versus relaxing in a comfy couch reading a tablet size device for leisure.

I still prefer reading on my kindle than iPad, but I wouldn't attribute it to refresh rate. We're not talking about those old CRTs with noticeable screen refresh.
In a lecture for neuroscience the professor explained something about parts of the brain which get tired because for each picture (50 times a second) they have to process the information. As a result these parts of the brain eventually get tired which can make it more difficult to process the visual information which you do conciously experience. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact details.
Anyhow, that it is more tiring to read from an LCD screen is something which we agree upon. That is much more important than the exact causes.

Heck, I wish they had a PS3 or 360 option, so I could use it like I do Hulu Plus and Netflix.

I should note that Amazon does have an MP3 purchasing app that comes preinstalled on many Android phones. I've used it before, and makes things quick and easy. I don't have figures related to that app though.
If you purchase a PlayOn license and install it on your PC, you can run access Amazon VOD on many devices. (You can also run Neflix, Hulu and many other video services.) This is probably only useful for US residents but it works great for me!

I have the PlayOn app on my Galaxy Tab and as long as I have the PlayOn app running on my PC I can watch anywhere.

Kindle is a very nice and cheap device but it is artificially limited to increase scarcity. 1) It is meant only for Amazon books, 2) It doesn't allow books from other vendors due to DRM, incompatible formats by design and closed device. (I can use Kindle only because I cross the legal line and remove the DRM.) 3) Georestrictions. Need I say more?

Kindle yet have to achieve the level of exclusivity of Apple products but it looks that Amazon wants to follow the footsteps of Apple/Soviets. It is exactly my 20+ years old Soviet experience that people have some money and they want to buy stuff but the vendor will not sell it to them. You would have either to be put on the waiting list or buy it in the black market.

You have stated this in another thread and have been asked for proof by giving a link to the article you quote, could you do this please?

I did a quick google and it looks like the IPad is 60 times a second. Maybe you are refering to TV broadcasts (like in the UK)?

Still requires some of the aforementioned things though. I don't use Windows, so not an option for me.

There's always PlanOnLinux. There are workarounds for OSX.

I think that you are trolling.

1) For example, there is no way to upload other books via 3G without paying Amazon for data transfer. Wi-Fi is better but sometimes I still get documents in proper format rejected when sending them through <user>@free.kindle.com. Why can't I use Wi-Fi directly for this?

2) Too obvious, doesn't even require rebuttal.

3) Yes, stupid publishers, and Amazon facilitates them.
