I was told by a Kobo rep that version 1.9 is only for the WiFi model. She mentioned that when a version for the non-WiFi becomes available, it may have a different number. From this I gathered that Kobo is still interested in providing updates for their other model. Let's hope I'm reading this right.
I have version 1.9 on the WiFi, and I just love to be able to go to a certain page, or to close a book that I decided not to read at the present time.

If Kobo people are reading this, we really want and need that version for our non-WiFi Kobos.

So how do you get the update?
I updated my desktop to kobo 1.9 version and keep hitting sync but nothing.

nevermind, i finally got it. What a stupid contrived method of getting an update.

I'm borrowing my boyfriend's Kobo and it also says that it's 1.7.4. Is there a way to wirelessly update it, without having to install anything onto my PC?

Sure, the eReader automatically checks for updates when you connect to a wireless network.

The latest update is being made available on a 5% at a time basis, so you may have to connect many times before hitting the jackpot.

This tactic seems specially designed to frustrate people, so I can't see the upside for Kobo, but there it is anyway.

I only have access to the wifi method and my bf never bothered to install the desktop software. After multiple connections to the wifi, still nothing. So just keep trying?

Looks like that's what we've got to do. I don't have the desktop either, so I just keep connecting about once a day or so.

I wonder: on the desktop, you guys are saying that you keep hitting "sync" and eventually it downloads. Would the same work for the Wifi, i.e. connect, disconnect, reconnect, disconnect, reconnect...? Connecting multiple times, and hoping that it'll eventually get it? I've just been trying about once a day, and not getting anything. And I'm getting frustrated because I've been waiting for this update since November.
