I'm vegan and am not obsessed with food nor calories. And I can lift 20 lbs. To each their own, but some of the responses here seem a little inflammatory. I'm not sure why.
I take a B12 supplement once a week and Vitamin D daily. Many people are low in Vitamin D, even omnivores and people who spend a lot of time outdoors. Best to have a blood test to find out. |

As far as inflammatory comments, it is true that I commented: "I have known a few vegans and I have to agree, they reminded me of reformed smokers, they were the ones telling me that eating meat was wrong. None of them could have lifted a 20 pound bag of soya beans without help though. " If you notice the first thing I said was that "I knew a few Vegans..." this was my honest opinion of Vegans I KNOW, not a generalization of all Vegans as you suggest. I was genuinely interested in knowing the answer to the question "Do Vegans require supplements to get a balance diet?" I was hoping a vegan would answer that for me, thanks for doing that. Cheers |

But taking vitamin supplements isn't as healthy as getting the vitamins from meat, dairy and eggs.

20lbs is very little, unless you're holding it with one hand horizontally... If you're talking about bench pressing, maybe you meant 200 lbs ? That's not a large stretch, I can't do it but know several people who can... Last edited by Enkidu of Abydos; 03-12-2011 at 01:25 AM. |

In the case of Vitamin D, it is a supplement that is added to milk. So it's a supplement either way. At least when you take a capsule you are aware of how much you are getting. In the case of Vitamin B12, it is produced by bacteria, the body only requires very small amounts and there is no evidence that the source is relevant to health.
