The K3 is lighter even in a case. At least, that is what I have read from people who own both.
There are many folks on this board who have both a Sony and a Kindle, or a Nook and a Kindle, there are a large number of permutations... If you enjoy the Sony but are attracted to a Kindle and you can afford both it is not a bad situation to be in. You would have easier access to Amazons store and the library. |

I can definitely see the benefits of owning both, I thought perhaps I was being 'greedy' to want both. Will have to see if I can get a better price, strangely, I have been watching e bay and they actually sell for MORE than the amazon price, like to like, seems crazy to me?

I also faffed around trying to convert PDFs to EPUB with Sigil and Calibre but couldn't do it within a reasonable time-frame. Thats despite a computer science degree :P
Basically unless your an expert don't bother trying to convert the files to epub in Calibre. The sony reader handles PDF files pretty well and In my experiance Calibre doesn't do a good job of converting them to EPUB. Correcting them manually in Sigil is too much work. For the best experiance purchase/download books that already come in the EPUB format. The sony readers very easy to use if you stick to the basics ![]() Last edited by Rob87; 02-19-2011 at 08:20 PM. |

To be honest, I had the same problem as original poster...
Then I just decided to save my stuff as simple txt files. If a pdf has pics, not a problem I take all the pages(pic) and export them into a folder, then use some scanner OCR software to convert them to txt). If I have a problem with hard returns at the end of each line, all I do in word is go ahead add some crazy text where I want a paragraph (ex. +++) then i just use either replace using ^p (shortcut for hard return) with nothing or a space, depending on the way they put the hard return. Sometimes they (creators) add a space sometiems they dont. Worst case senario is that I go ahead and fix any little changes that I have, via notepad, wordpad, etc. But I'd say I end up with a very useable txt file that will work perfectly. I never used the sony software, as the one that came with the prs-505 sux'd. I used calabre for a bit, it did what is was suppose to and more in my opion. But in the end all i do is just drag the files from pc into a folder on memopry card then slap it into the reader. Mine is holding about 2000 books atm, tried to load up about 15,000 text files once but wouldnt get past the loading stage, hehe Here are soem info links about the hard returns, in case I did not explain it correctly. http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_ms_word_...ge_returns.htm Also I have used this in the apst http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/Clean_Up_Text.htm works with word only i believe... |

At last I have been able to convert pdfs to mobi/pcr/epub quite satisfactoraly.
As suggested elseware load the pdf into MobiPocket Creator which is free and it will churn out an html and an .pcr. For the table of contents I have found it better to clean out the table in the html and then use the functions in the creator on h1 and h2 etc. to make the table. Also it is posible to put the html into sigil and go straight to epub. There is a tutorial on this subject here. It takes very little time to do a conversion (Max 1 hr.) |

And the MobiPocketCreator needs to be the Editors version. I never care to tiedy it up because the only thing funny that is left after conversion are page numbers in case the original PDF had them. Those I am able to ignore when reading. |

Hi Poppaea
Do you go to epub or stick with pcr? If so do you use Calibre or Sigil - I'm never sure of the result with Calibre. |

I just convert them via Calibre from pcr to lrf as I don't like epub. The only thing that sometimes is a bit messy is when the PDF had headers or footers. Those are better cleaned up. Actually you do not need to use Sigil but can work it out right in the .xml or .html the PDF is broken down to by MobiPocketCreator. In case you prefer Sigil you can use it of course.
