Open is good for all. But in a commercial situation, reciprocity it required.

Apple would be mad to allow competing electronics manufacturers to expect to operate their stores on Apple devices if they, in turn, do not reciprocate.

Strange how none of the reporting points this out, but then there wouldn't be a story.
No one is pointing it out because it is not true. The Sony reader supports Adobe DRM. That DRM is open to anyone willing to pay the licensing. Apple books use Fairplay DRM. Apple only allows Fairplay on Apple devices. It was Apple's decision.

The same situation exists with Amazon. Amazon will not allow Mobi DRM on reader devices with Adobe DRM (or any other). And Amazon will not allow any device to support Kindle IDs.

Contrary to what that article says, there are many people that attack Amazon as well for their lock-in.

Once again I believe this is the consumers fault, if people would stop falling for the Apple business model they would not get away with it. Apple has become masterful at preying on the gullible...

Preying on the gullible. So that is the only way a company can be successful? If people are as stupid and gullible as you believe they are, why aren't there more companies that are as successful as Apple in the consumer electronics market? A company on the verge of bankruptcy over a decade ago....

I find it humorous that people are harrumphing over Apple's decision without fully understanding what the issues are and coming to the defense of Sony... SONY! A company with a quite checkered past with regard to respecting their customers.... remember the rootkit fiasco? Or Sony's penchant for foisting expensive proprietary media formats on consumers?

I'd rather wait until the full story is revealed and THEN draw a conclusion. Is there a deadline to beat that any blame assigning must be done right now?

Yes, serious deadline... 5 minutes may pass without an evil company being chastised (for evil company, of course, substitute Apple most of the time)

What a poor decision by Apple. I suppose they will next prevent all e-commerce through the iPad browser? I suppose if the Amazon app gets the boot, the Amazon web reader might be made to detect and work with iOS devices?

I guess I'll be getting a Droid instead of an iPhone 4. No need to wait now.

Screw them all! It is just this behavior that pushes me more & more to go to the net for all of my book needs.

I want to be able to purchase my books from ANY damn store I want & to put them on ANY reader/tablet that I have at any given time. If you refuse to accommodate me, I'll find another way to get what I want.
Do not blame Sony for B&N deciding to go with different DRM for ePub. That is totally B&N's fault. Sony did not do anything wrong here. You are basically saying it's Sony's fault. It's B&N's fault. Why not blame Sony for not being able to handle ePub from Apple too while you are at it.

An Apple E-Book Rule Tightens

The company will now require app developers that sell e-books outside Apple apps to sell the books inside those apps, too.

Personally, I don't see what the big deal is. Sony has one of the lousiest interface of any ebookstore and for years they didn't even offer a workable solution for people with Macs.

When I had my PRS-500, I never could buy a single book from Sony because their store did not work with Macs. If it weren't for Calibre, my 500 would've been useless. Even when they finally did offer a store for the Mac, they didn't fix it to work with older readers.

Bottom line is Sony shouldn't be crybabies considering the stunts they have pulled.

Years ago, I had a Sony Vaio laptop. It didn't have a cd/dvd drive. One day I had to do a complete reinstall from the system recovery disks. To do so, I had to buy their $200 proprietary external drive. You couldn't use a regular external cd/dvd drive.

I'm beyond tired of format wars, I'm beyond tired of the games these companies play, I just want to read books. This is supposed to be a free market, but none of these companies want any competition, and we consumers are the ones that get caught in the middle.
