Go check out ebook-reader-review.toptenreviews.com/. Look at the line for supported formats. Even though they rate Kindle #1 the Nook (e-ink and color) support a much wider variety of formats. If you like using your library website to download books (a capability many people don't know about) then be aware that libraries use either EPUB, PDF DRM or Mobi none of which is supported by Kindle. Amazon offers a large content but mobileread and gutenberg offer thousands of public domain books for free. You'll likely have to pay Amazon for these texts (if you like classics, Shakespeare, Dickens... are all free) but if you buy a device that supports EPUB then you shouldn't have a problem. Kindle does not support EPUB, Mobi or PDF DRM.

Gutenberg and Mobileread non-drm books are as available for Kindle as they are any device, even if they weren't available in mobi format, which they are.

Amazon has 1.8 million free public domain books, and I doubt that is limited to the classics.

The library issue is valid, though.
