Methinks you're trying to make this more black and white than it really is at this point in time. Yes, it should be black and white. No, it's not, presently.

My position is this: If it's illegal to remove DRM from your purchased ebooks for personal use, it's a bad law, and I won't follow it.

It is currently illegal (in the UK, where I live) to import CDs into iTunes. That's a bad law too, and I won't follow it.

In spite of any appearance of conflict, I appreciate your input.

If I may, I'd like to step back and make an observation.

It seems most of the discussion is about one of two things. One is about the mechanics of what can or cannot physically be done to remove DRM corruption and vague comments about how to do it. The other is what is legal.

But in many of these discussions, it seems like "right" and "wrong" are implicitly equated with "legal" and "illegal". There isn't much discussion about the rightness or morality of the law.

One of America's founding documents, The Declaration of Independence, says We hold these truths to be self evident. That is, many things are right or wrong independent of any government. The goodness of government law is in how well it recognizes and matches natural law.

Some comments hint at this, but there seems to be a void that I find a little alarming.

OK! Now that sounds a little more like a discussion of natural law. Good.

It's also against the law to sleep naked in Minnesota. Unless I tell someone I've done it though, it's just as unenforceable as removing DRM.

I don't necessarily equate what is legal, with what is "moral" or "right"- for me, that's a very broad philosophical discussion that I can speak about for days from 5 different angles.
