Takes less than a second for my Kobo to page turn refresh. When reading a new paperback it takes me 5 times that long just to separate the pages to turn them!

Perhaps it does depend on the book, but I sideload all my books (either through Adobe or Calibre) since I also have my 8-year-old daughters' ebooks on my Kobo account and I don't need those synched onto my own Kobo. The speed of my page turns can't be attributed to using Kobo epub files.

I tweeted about Kobo also supporting .txt and .rtf files and Sameer replied, stating that support for these two file formats is still experimental. The files I've loaded seem to be working well, though.

I don't find the page turns particularly slow, certainly faster than a P book. I love the Kobo, but the Borders software in use in Australia was probably designed by the Australian Tax Office's IT department. (You have to live here to appreciate how BAD that is). I also appreciate that Kobo answers questions, complaints and general whinging here on the forum. Not many device manufacturers are brave enough to do this.

maybe you're right most of my book are sideloaded. and i use several different software to create them from PDF and such.

CazMar have you considered changing over to the Kobo desktop app instead of the Borders one? I personally don't use either anymore but I think the Kobo app was marginally better than the Borders one. You can't use both though - it has to be one or the other.

For those who didn't say hyperlinking was on your list of wants, I dare you to read a Discworld book and see how frustrating it is not to be able to go to the endnotes. And all Discworld eBooks have endnotes.

I'm sure you're right, JSWolf. I probably wouldn't attempt such a book on an ereader since flipping to different parts of a book isn't as quick as it would be with a paper book.

Reading ebooks has cured me of my habbit of flipping through a book to see what happens before going back to where I am and reading straight through!

Yes, that's slow. I wasn't doubting your word, just saying that mine isn't that slow (I just counted, and it was less than a second- if I hit the button and say "twenty-one", I've got the new page before I finish the word). I can understand that you're frustrated with yours being so slow.
What version of the firmware are you running?

I have to say I have had nothing but negative experiences with Kobo, both device and company. I am currently on my fourth one, because of their ridiculous SD card problems. Any bug reports/trouble tickets to Kobo are ignored and then deleted without being answered. I have been "escalated to a supervisor" twice and never contacted.

The latest upgrade to 1.8.1 may be the last straw. I can no longer hide the 100 preloaded books and it took nearly an hour for it to process my SD card content. I feel certain that it would have been faster had it not indexed all the pictures on my card. I would have removed them if Kobo had been so kind as to supply something so extraordinary as release notes.

Oh, did I mention that my fourth Kobo is physically falling apart? It's a good thing I keep it in a nice case and handle it gently, otherwise it would have disintegrated by now.

If you're considering buying a Kobo, go buy something else. Even a knockoff Kobo from some dodgy back alley in Shanghai would be more reliable.

News flash: While I was writing this post, I was doing a factory reset on my Kobo. Now it doesn't display ANY books. Not even the 100 included books. Not the ones on the SD card. Nothing.

What a piece of garbage.

Just a reminder, the instructions for fixing update problems are here in the thread on the installation of 1.8.1.

Don't you then run up against the problem of not being able to access your own Borders books? I thought the reason we have to use the Borders app was because of the restrictions on where we can buy ebooks?
In some ways I would rather keep complaining about the Borders software until it gets fixed.

LOL, CazMar--I know that what some folks do is choose one of the stores for the Kobo formatted books (the ones they sync with) with and download ePUB books from any store they wish. If Borders is your syncing store than you will need their desktop application. However, when you buy books from kobobooks ( or Sony or wherever) it just opens in Adobe Digital Editions and you transfer your books from there, or then bring them into Calibre.

I actually thought the Kobo was quite rugged. It survives life in my backpack (unlike most of my cosmetics) and being used for several hours each day. I have the rubbery jacket around it and when in my bag lives in a 70cent homemade sleeve to protect the screen. What parts are breaking?
I am a musician and used to carrying and using extremely expensive and breakable instruments and electrical equipment, perhaps there are ways of packing things that I just do automatically?
