An important thing to remember with marketing is that it's not like a wage slave job. You're not swapping an hour of your time for a given rate of pay.
At *best* you're doing work today that you'll get "paid" for eventually. A week from now. A month from now. A year from now. On a more positive note, it's also work that you might get paid for more than once (unlike that hour of work). I'm not sure if that's supposed to be encouraging. But after a while you get used to it. ![]() -David |

David, right with you there.
My old boss used to say "there are no wrong answers in marketing" and it's true. I just try to look at it this way. Everything you do is a step in the right direction, eventually, somewhere down the line, it will work out. This is the internet now, it's not as if your book has a shelf life... and in 10 years time, even if it's still selling in fits and starts, you'll probably have 10 more books out by then, all selling in starts and fits so you won't notice. Cheers MTM |

You're quite right, David. I'm hoping the marketing efforts of now will pay off in the months to come. This is definitely a long-term venture.

Unfortunately, there's no concrete way to tell what leads to sales and what doesn't. All I know is that I hang out on forums for a little while every night. And some days I have half a dozen sales, and some days I have zero.
But I'm making lunch money and making friends, which is more fun than sending query letters and getting rejections! |

Of course, the longer I've stayed here, and actually voiced my opinions on some issues, I've actually lost some of the positive aura I once had at MR. So think about (dare I say it?) finding other forums to use to spread the word. And try to avoid the politics and debate. Unfortunately, it's becoming rare to find a forum that allows advertisement, even something in a sig, so you might make friends on other sites, but they may not result in many sales. This site is unique in that way. |

Don't forget to look at the communities on Amazon itself. There is one for every conceivable genre. They each have forums and they all allow for shameless self promotion.
Check it out. My sales have jumped through the use of these avenues. |

I really don't know what works, I talk about my novels and try to enjoy the boards I frequent. I post and talk about odd stuff on my website that isn't always related to my Tether stories. Sometimes I get nothing, sometimes I get something and I don't think there is a sure fire this works strategy.
I have one short story up on B&N and the Kindle which I've hardly ever mentioned and its doing amazing. Really, it does come down to word of mouth. Good luck, keep writing though don't get caught up trying to sell. We are at our core storytellers not salesman. Arigato, Nick Davis |
