I don't mind the progress bar, but I can see the benefits of turning it off. A few years ago I read Orson Scott Card's “Ender's Game” in a paperback that included “Speaker for the Dead”. I was a bit surprised by the ending of “Ender's Game” (in a good way) and I might not have been surprised if I had known, how much of the book was left. I didn't know that, because I didn't know when “Speaker for the Dead” would start.

Why buy a Kindle and then complain about the features it lacks that other readers do have that you could have gotten?

Other readers have the features missing from the Kindle that I read complaints about not having. So why go for a Kindle and then complain about the lack of features you feel are important?
The same reason people buy iPhones: marketing trumps logic every time.

Oh I'm reading Ender's Game right now and I have no idea if the ebook includes an excerpt to another book (was it an excerpt, or the whole book?). So maybe there you go, maybe I *am* reading a book right now without knowing how many pages are left!

And with respect to Amazon, they are actually very good about listening to their customers. I predict you will see page numbers as an option in 2011. But not library book access, since they would lose money on that.

Rather short-sighted of them, since I'm quite sure I'm not the only person around by any means who will check a book out from the library to find out if I like it enough to buy it.
