I wanted to see if this book was any good since I read that the last one, The Gathering Storm, was horrible. Oddly the reviews for the prior one are better now and if you take a look at most of the one star reviews for Towers Of Midnight youll find that they are all complaining about lack of a Kindle version. Its great that she dropped it down to three months instead of a year but thats still entirely too much time.

I've heard Gathering Storm was actually really really good. I can't wait to get into it. But yeah the one star reviews for Tower of Midnight are uncalled for, I know it's a way to try and punish the publisher/seller/distributor/whatever, but it's pretty shallow to me, the reviews are supposed to be about the story.

[emphasis mine] I have to disagree. Quite a bit in fact! You aren't just buying a story, you are buying a whole "package" [whether that package is a paperbook, an ebook, a dvd, a dvd set, etc, etc]. I know I have shied away from several purchases of dvd sets because reviewers told about disc's getting scratched from poor design, stuff breaking, blah blah blah.

Same goes for books. If a book is filled with errors, I want to know about it. Before I plunk down my extremely hard earned "fun" money, I want to make sure that I am not getting a lemon. If the publishers want to play games with the books I WANT to buy, then they need to expect a backlash.

And since there isn't any other way for us, the consumer, to protest about the non-release of a book, we have to fight with the tools given us. Hence the 1 star reviews.

Of course there's other ways. What you mean is; "there's no other way that's not visible to the rest of the world." You could contact the publisher. Flood them with emails from enraged fans. Email the author, begging them to influence their publisher. What you don't do is give a negative review of a book you haven't read. A book review should be just that -- a review of the books content.

Besides, the publishers aren't reading your silly one-star reviews... only other potential Amazon readers are. Where's the sense in that? I happen to think that the anger behind the one-star reviews themselves is justified... just terribly, terribly misplaced. It should be directed toward publishers alone. Publishing grievances shouldn't be aired on a retailer provided forum intended for readers. The readers who rely on book reviews for their purchases are the ONLY ones you are hurting with these one-star reviews. But, I'm sure it must feel good to vent... misplaced as it is.

Reviews should be used to review the story. I have no problem with reviews being used to point out problems with typos and the like, as long as people are willing to go back and revise the review when the problems are fixed. I do have a problem with people reviewing a product based on its lack of availability or price.

Price is subjective so giving a one star review to a book because it is above your price point is not fair. That is out of the authors control.

As long as I have been alive the hardback came out first and 6 months to a year later the paper back came out. I don't remember people giving one star reviews when the hardback was released because the paper back version was not released at the same time. The Publisher gets to decide when books are released and in what format they are released. It is inconvienent for us but so was waiting a year for books to come out in paperback.

If there are a ton of typos make sure to let Amazon know. They will refund your money and let the publisher know.

Price is objective fact. Nothing at all subjective about it.

The author signs a contract. They were not forced to do it. The behaviour of their business partners will always affect them. If they do a deal with someone known for high pricing - that is, crappy value for consumers - how can you reasonably not expect people to say this book is a ripoff?

It is the agents that get to escape the consumer blowback, generally.

Okay......so how are you reviewing something you don't have yet?? You can't guess the quality of the "package" unless you have it to review right??

I can see the problem with reviewing it like this. These 1 Star reviews make little sense. You cant rate even the 'package' because there isnt one. Theyre complaining because they cant buy it a format of their choice. I can see that and dont blame them. However I fail to see how putting 1 Star reviews hurts the publisher or would even somehow rouse their attention. Looking at most of those 1 Star reviews one can tell that theyre mostly about the Kindle. Knowing that they ignore them all and go to 2 Star reviews which, hopefullly, are on the product.

Guess itll only work if people just look at the number of stars and base their purchase on that instead of reading the reviews. If someone decides whether to buy the book or not based on just the number of stars the publisher may be losing some money here. Im not sure if anyone buys books like that so I dont know. Thats the only real way I can see this affecting the publisher and sales, but even then I dont think theyd care.

This is crazy. I want to pay the publisher / author up to $20 for the electronic version of their book. But, they have decided I must buy the paper copy or wait for the library if I want to read it (maybe borrow from a friend). To add insult to injury, I could get what I want for $0 if I i) knew where to look and ii) didn't mind breaking some laws.

How can this make sense to anyone? Least of all those holding back the ebook.

I bought the paper version and it's currently on my bookshelf, but I did download the epub version for my nook. I'm a collector and am getting all of the Wheel of Time books in HB but holy crap those things are meaty. Too big to read comfortably so I started and finished the book on my nook.

I have to say, Harriet's intransigence doesn't surprise me. This is the woman that editted RJ's books for all these years, after all - and didn't do a very good job, frankly. A really good editor could have tightened up the storylines and gotten rid of all the sniffing and clothing descriptions and 20 pages of braid pulling while calling men sheepherders. But maybe that's just me.
