So, yeah, I know this is old, but I feel like giving my 2 cents is important.
The smooth as butter feeling of the switch is given by its sliding between the two "smooth plastic" tips in the inside of the kindle chassis.
And the "force back" spring mechanism looks pretty darn invincible in itself (though if the slide is sluggish, I wouldn't tempt fate by keeping it "away from resting position" for too long)

If you have problems it can only be because filth got in its way.
Then, I guess like the right solvent might even do miracles, in the right place and in the right quantities.. Or even simple air if you are very lucky.
But at least in the case of my 6 years old K3, the dirt was so sticked and pesky that not even a toothbrush would have done it.
Scraping it took a fair share of time even with a sharp screwdriver and a touch of spittle.
Not to mention I found some of the mud even on the housing itself (and the only way to get privileged access to that is removing the whole backbone plate and keyboard pad)

Also, if you tear it down, remember to refasten well screws afterwards.. I have this feeling that the buttons are more likely to grind on the upper side of their cavity than the bottom, and a secured motherboard surely hinders that.

After all these considerations, finally, true profit. It's like brand new now.
