I just tried to order a 950 off the BB website, for pickup at one of the local stores (they all still say they have it in stock, just like they said on Sunday). Within an hour I got an email admitting that the inventory is wrong. To add a little extra BB incompetence to the whole transaction, they supplied a # to call to make alternate arrangements for fulfilling the order...and that computer system is down.

Maybe spending that Nook trade-in gift card on Sony ebook cards is a better idea.

Update: I finally got through to Customer Service at BB last night and they offered to ship the 950 to me. Afterwards I checked the stock at the local stores on the website and they finally showed nothing in stock. This morning I have the "it's backordered and we don't know when we'll ever ship your order so would you like to cancel" email from BB, and all the local stores are showing the 950 in inventory again.

Grrr. Arghh.

Don't even bother with the website. After reading this thread on Sunday, I stopped by the local BB on Monday evening and had a helpful person at the service desk get me one out of store stock.

I strongly suspect that BB are hanging onto the 950s because they don't want to be stuck discounting the 900s they have in store stock and the distribution chain. Don't expect them to advertise them or admit they have any in the stores until the PRS-900s are mostly sold out or we're at November 25, whichever comes first.

Long-time lurker, infrequent poster.

I got my PRS-950 yesterday - 10/26/2010.

The whole BestBuy thing: I'm inclined to speculate that units were shipped to stores with the intent that they be used as demos, and then got into the inventory system and immediately bumped onto the web without any intervening human mediation. Then, once advertized, the stores realized they might have to honor what they advertized.

So, some stores are saying, "Nope, don't have any!" Others, such as the store I called, have made a decision to honor the ad.

Of the several stores in my area, those that the web site showed as having the 950 "available" for store pickup also showed it as "backordered" for shipping, with a one to two week shipping projection.

So the whole thing seemed like an example of automation and dynamic content gone wrong.

During my phone call to the nearest store showing it as "available," it took them several minutes to come back with word that they had one. When I asked them how many they'd received, they replied, "Two." When I asked if they'd hold one for me for a few hours they said, "No problem."

So I drove down and picked it up. No problem.

Best wishes to all --

I have the 950 also

I bought two from Best Buy on 10/22, but have had trouble with both, just freezing up, according to Sony the units that Best Buy sold me were demo's, so I'm waiting for the new ones to come in for a exchange

Demo's from BB

If I were you I would call Sony support and have the Version and serial number check, BB is selling the Demo's that the stores have received.

Having trouble with wifi. Hit or miss connecting with the store. Says it's a DNS problem. I'm only 4 feet from my router. Seems to work OK with USB, though I don't think it likes hubs.

The 950's wifi seems to be of a delicate disposition. Things you can do:

1) turn off 3g if you're not using it (this will probably also save a little battery life)

2) don't be too close to an access point when trying to connect (noise sensitivity)

3) don't be too close to another wifi device when trying to connect (interference)

4) look at the signal strength meter on the lower left when trying to connect. My access point is in the basement. Bedroom's on 2nd floor. I get two arcs upstairs with the reader held horizontally above the floor and almost nothing over with it on the bed. The bed is apparently a pretty good wifi wave trap. Once connected, however, page loads happen fine either place.

Sorry if I this sounds silly (and it is rather off the thread topic) but I have to ask this:
Would the Wi-Fi/3G work outside US?

Took my 650 back to Borders yesterday. They didn't want to take it, but they did Got my money back (302 for 650 and Sony case-with-light) drove 1/4 mile to Best Buy and got a PRS 950. Asked "Will you match competitor's prices? Sony has it on their web site for 249.99" They did. No case. Only a USB cable and AC adapter.
I like the improved software set over the 650 and having an AC adapter is handy.

My local Best Buy had two 950's (in sealed boxes) for sale, but only a black, non-working prototype
out on display!

I'm also a PRS-900, and I was thinking about to change. I'm also interested in scientific PDFs.
900 was fine for the rare papers written in one column, but when two you loose the concentration going up&down on the page each 4 lines.
This is why my money are going now on a 350. At least I know I can use it only for epub
But I was thinking about:
Plan A investing on a 950 (at least a good monitor, but probably the change do not value the money).
Plan B just selling 900 and wait for reduced prices (still I should have 350 during this waiting)
Plan C get a DXG.. which u say is not good neither for scientific papers in PDF. I saw monitor is still smaller than an A4, so maybe too small for small typesetting, but as landscape works... should not be fine? At least the page should be just shared in two.... or not? Can u explain me why you didn't like neither DXG for PDF papers?!

Does the 900 have a four-quadrant view? I have one double-columned PDF book that I read that way on my 650 - there is a bit of overlap, but each quadrant is a lot more than four lines.
