Just finished Robin Hobb's Dragon Keeper and for me this book was a disappointment. The story progresses really slowly and I never feel for any of the characters. The dragons personalities are just boring. The story ends very abruptly to get you to buy the next book. I find it strange that it has gotten such high ratings as it has on Amazon. I'm comparing this book with Naomi Novik's Temeraire series which wins hands down. |

Dragon Keeper is certainly not Hobb's best. I loved the assassin/ships/fool tri-trilogy but since then her stuff has been rather meh. Finally gave up on The Opposing Shore and finished The History of Beauty. Started What the Buddha Taught, which I'm enjoying so far except that some of the (Sanskrit?) characters come out as ugly squares on my Opus. Annoying but not really an obstacle to reading. Still reading Ulysses too |

What are we reading? We are currently reading "Life" by Keith Richards (and James Fox who turned Richards' reminisces into readable sentences ) |

I finished Merlin's Harp by Ann Eliot Compton. It is Arthur's legend thru the eyes of a Fey. It was pretty shallow, but one of the Amazon freebies.

I'm finding "Life" a slow and arduous read. I would hate to see what Keith wrote before James Fox helped him along.

I'm reading "Dark Summit" by Nick Heil, which I picked up at a used book sale. I was delighted to find that it spotlights the 2006 season to Everest, which I'm familiar with now from the TV show "Everest: Beyond The Limit (first season)." Even better, the book is focusing on that team. I remember someone from outside of the featured expedition died, but didn't realize it was a part of a big controversy. I also just found two books on Mallory & Irvine that I'm chomping at the bit to buy.

I'm finishing up the second of E. F. Benson's Mapp & Lucia novels: Lucia in London. The comparisons I've read of Lucia to Hyacinth Bucket, though the two characters are not exact parallels, seem well founded to me.

The Chronicles of Amber, book 7 (Blood of Amber). I had read the first 6 all in one go, and decided to take a break.

I finished Child and Prestons seventh Pendergast novel, The Book of the Dead, which is also the third in the Diogenes trilogy. I think you can only like this book if you've read the second in the trilogy (the first only introduces Diogenes at the end of the book) because it doesn't explain what has happened before. Also the first half is slow; it's setting up everything for, what I assumed, a big and dramatic end. I was, unfortunately, wrong. I found the ending to be somewhat disappointing. I still like it, but I'm only giving it four out of five because of the ending. I'm going to start Summer Knight by Jim Butcher (book four of the Dresden Files) today. Hopefully Harry doesn't whine and complain as much as in the previous book, it started to get on my nerves. |

I've told this story before, and here it goes again. When Tim and I were dating and first married, we were dirt poor. For romantic evenings, we would pack a few snacks, his telescope, and the Amber cassettes that we borrowed from the library. We would drive out to the country away from city lights and stargaze while listening to books. Especially Amber. So anytime I'm reminded of the series, I get the warm nostalgic fuzzes.
