Love both Cleo and Alice's series, but have to admit the Coffee series grabs me more, too. Thistle and Twigg is on my TBR mountain. DixieGal, it's all worth it, LOL.

Currently re-reading the Aaron Elkins series about Gideon Oliver, a forensic anthropologist popularly known (to his chagrin) as "The Skeleton Detective".

I must confess that I skim the "romance" aspect between the store owner and the ghost when it appears.

I have just finished reading the excellent free Project Gutenberg e-book, The True Benjamin Franklin by Sydney George Fisher. I fully expected it to be a thorough biography of this extraordinary man, but in fact it's much more than that. I particularly enjoyed the fascinating insight that it provides into 18th century life in the colonies, England and France. Whilst I already had a somewhat sketchy knowledge of this period, this book acted as a lightning rod, aiding my understanding of what really happened during those stormy times. I love books that bring history alive like this. Definitely a very memorable book (for someone who has lived in the US, UK and France), though it did leave me wondering how many Americans - those who are so fond of railing against the French - have read it.

I am now reading The A-Z of Punishment and Torture by Irene Thompson. I received this DRM-free e-book as a gift from BeWrite Books, as part of the generous promotion that Neil Marr ran here at MR, recently. The first thing that I looked up was Water Boarding. Man's inhumanity to Man is both fascinating and terrifying, consequently this book is both gripping and thought provoking. A must-read for anyone interested in the work of Amnesty International and human rights abuses - not just the history of human "civilisation", from ancient times to present day. The graphic nature of the subject in this rather ghoulish book is brought to life with superb illustrations by Catherine Edmunds.

I finished Triggerfish Twist. It is very violent, but at the same time I was laughing so hard that I kept waking Tim up. Murder and intrigue in a quickly becoming white trash neighborhood in Tampa. I plan to get the rest of the books in the series. I highly recommend it.
Thanks, I'll go over there and say hi!

Finished the second Sandman Slim novel, "Kill the Dead" by Richard Kadrey last night.

This time Satan returns to earth to work on his Hollywood biopic and takes Stark along as a bodyguard. Things go from bad to worse and L.A. starts to go up in flames and it's up to Sandman Slim to save the world, again...

Another snarky, funny novel full of zombies, Angels, Sub Rosa magicians, and Department of Homeland Security agents. The ending leaves no doubt that there will be further novels.

I finished Out of the Silent Planet by C. S. Lewis which was only OK and am trying to slog through Perelandra. If I finish it at all it will be with a lot of skimming. Lewis' brand of Christian theology and speculative fiction worked better as fantasy than SF.
George MacDonald did this kind of thing much better.

I took a peek at Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson and got drawn into the first chapter so I may abandon Lewis for Stephenson's trilogy.

"The Advent of Lena," a modern twist on "Beauty and the Beast." Interesting read....

I decided to go for a classic, so I'm on the first volume of The D'Artagnan Romances uploaded by HarryT.

It starts off a bit slow, and the translation is a bit archaic, but it soon picks up, and I'm really enjoying it.

Interesting how tastes vary. I thoroughly enjoyed most of Grishams work previously. This one (The Innocent Man) I did not. Read it some time ago so I don't remember exactly now why, but noted that I thought it was poor.

Have just read *The Confession*. Almost gave up after 10% or so but stuck with it to the end. And wonder why I did. It disappoints me when an Author chooses to use their commercial position as a soap box to express their own political opinions. I may be wrong but that is how I saw this "novel"?.

I realize the subject is an emotive one in the US.

Why is it thought reasonable to expect their readers to pay to read work like this, (Fortunately for me it was a library copy in this case). Michael Chichton was another prize example of this.
