Two books about women who went to sea in the 19th Century, both by Joan Druett, $2.99 for Kindle:
Hen Frigates: Passion and Peril, Nineteenth-Century Women at Sea A "hen frigate," traditionally, was any ship with the captain's wife on board. Hen frigates were miniature worlds -- wildly colorful, romantic, and dangerous. Here are the dramatic, true stories of what the remarkable women on board these vessels encountered on their often amazing voyages: romantic moonlit nights on deck, debilitating seasickness, terrifying skirmishes with pirates, disease-bearing rats, and cockroaches as big as a man's slipper. And all of that while living with the constant fear of gales, hurricanes, typhoons, collisions, and fire at sea. Interweaving first-person accounts from letters and journals in and around the lyrical narrative of a sea journey, maritime historian Joan Druett brings life to these stories. We can almost feel for ourselves the fear, pain, anger, love, and heartbreak of these courageous women. http://www.amazon.com/Hen-Frigates-P...s=hen+frigates She Captains: Heroines and Hellions of the Sea If a "hen frigate" was any ship carrying a captain's wife, then a "she captain" is a bold woman distinguished for courageous enterprise in the history of the sea. "She captains," who infamously possessed the "bodies of women and the souls of men," thrilled and terrorized their shipmates, doing "deeds beyond the valor of women." Some were "bold and crafty pirates with broadsword in hand." Others were sirens, too, like the Valkyria Princess Alfhild, whom the mariners made rover-captain for her beauty. Like their male counterparts, these astonishing women were drawn to the ocean's beauty -- and its danger. http://www.amazon.com/She-Captains-H...R12NJFXHD2TMJ1 |

Vietnam: A View From the Front Lines by Andrew Wiest (Osprey Publishing) http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00BO4GDJI Product Description Tracing the American experience of the Vietnam War from its popular inception to its morale-crushing and bitter conclusion, Vietnam: A View from the Frontlines is a grunt's-eye view of the conflict - from the steaming rice paddies and swamps of the Mekong Delta, to the triple-canopy rainforest of the Central Highlands, to the forlorn Marine bases that dotted the DMZ. Like Karl Marlantes' ground-breaking novel Mattherhorn, this book will change the way we think about Vietnam. Told in the uncompromising, no-holds barred language of the soldiers themselves, the stories contained within this book detail everything from heroism to battle, and from helicopters hitting the LZs to the impact on soldiers’ loved ones at home. It is a true and grippingly accurate portrait of the American war in Vietnam through the eyes of the soldiers, medics, corpsmen, nurses and widows who experienced it. The book is based on rich collections housed at the Center of Military History and at the Vietnam Archive at Texas Tech. |

I didn't purchase it at the time, but the cover looks very familiar--I think that it is a repeat in the U.S. Of course, if you've bought it, but forgotten about it, don't worry, Amazon will let you know. ![]() |

Astoria: John Jacob Astor and Thomas Jefferson's Lost Pacific Empire: A Story of Wealth, Ambition, and Survival by Peter Stark http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00DB361N8 I read this book in paper form several years ago. I thought it was good. The amazon blurb: the thrilling, true-adventure tale of the 1810 Astor Expedition, an epic, now forgotten, three-year journey to forge an American empire on the Pacific Coast. Peter Stark offers a harrowing saga in which a band of explorers battled nature, starvation, and madness to establish the first American settlement in the Pacific Northwest and opened up what would become the Oregon trail, permanently altering the nation's landscape and its global standing. Six years after Lewis and Clark's began their journey to the Pacific Northwest, two of the Eastern establishment's leading figures, John Jacob Astor and Thomas Jefferson, turned their sights to founding a colony akin to Jamestown on the West Coast and transforming the nation into a Pacific trading power. Author and correspondent for Outside magazine Peter Stark recreates this pivotal moment in American history for the first time for modern readers, drawing on original source material to tell the amazing true story of the Astor Expedition. Unfolding over the course of three years, from 1810 to 1813, Astoria is a tale of high adventure and incredible hardship in the wilderness and at sea. Of the more than one hundred-forty members of the two advance parties that reached the West Coast—one crossing the Rockies, the other rounding Cape Horn—nearly half perished by violence. Others went mad. Within one year, the expedition successfully established Fort Astoria, a trading post on the Columbia River. Though the colony would be short-lived, it opened provincial American eyes to the potential of the Western coast and its founders helped blaze the Oregon Trail. |

Thanks to bfisher, too, for the initial post. This is one that I would much prefer to listen to than read. Unfortunately, even the Whispersync deal ($14.98) for this title costs much more than I'm willing to pay. I suppose for now I'll satisfy some of my curiosity by reading whatever Wikipedia has about the story. This does look like it would be a very interesting book. It tells about an event in America that was pretty significant, yet I knew nothing about. In the past I have associated John Jacob Astor with the business (grocery, I think) that he nurtured into a huge enterprise, making him fabulously wealthy. Too, I remember that he was one of the unfortunate souls to have been on the Titanic's maiden voyage. Sadly, he was one who didn't survive. |

GtrsRGr8- if you happen to subscribe to Scribd, both the ebook and audiobook are available. I've added it to my library as it sounds interesting.

Thanks. I didn't know that Scribd offered any audiobooks. I need to check out Scribd, again, and/or that other service like it, which name I have forgotten right now. I take it that you're satisfied with Scribd?

GtrsRGr8 - Yes, I'm very satisfied with my Scribd subscription, which I've had for nearly two years now. Their selection is good, including many titles from several major publishers. Their app is rather basic, but it's certainly usable and they continue to improve it. For example, the app doesn't include a dictionary, which would obvioiusly be a desirable feature. But I accept the limitations of the app and very much enjoy their selection.
They've offered audiobooks since November of 2014, and have tens of thousands of audiobooks available, which are included in the subscription price. The other service you're referring to is Oyster. I've never subscribed to Oyster other than on a free trial basis. Their ebook selection is probably comparable to Scribd, but I don't believe they offer any audiobooks. Thus, I find Scribd to be a better deal since I also enjoy listening to audiobooks. I believe Scribd offers a 30-day free trial, so you can check them out and see if they have the type of ebooks and audiobooks you like. Enjoy! SteveK |

Yeah, it had been before November of last year that I had last taken a look at Scribd. "Oyster"--how could I forget a name like that!(ha) If Oyster hasn't already started to offer audiobooks, I'm sure that they will in order to stay competitive with Scribd. Otherwise they'll end up in the dustbin of history. Being the model of efficiency that he is, tubemonkey already has some information on Scribd on the OP (Opening Post). I should have known. ha |
