No. OK, I'll give you possibly the most famous lines, from right at the start.

"Pray my Dear," quoth my mother, "have you not forgot to wind up the clock?"

"Good G**!" cried my father, making an exclamation, but taking care to moderate his voice at the same time, "Did ever woman, since the creation of the world, interrupt a man with such a silly question?"

It sounds like a rather sexy novel, but I have no idea. I don't recall those lines in Fanny Hill.

One clue: The Captain of the first quotation is the uncle of the person who's father and mother are in the second quotation.

If no-one else gets it, I'll give some more clues tomorrow.

OK, some more from the book.

Quote:
I have begun a new book, on purpose that I might have room enough to explain the nature of the perplexities in which my uncle Toby was involved, from the many discourses and interrogations about the siege of Namur, where he received his wound.

I must remind the reader, in case he has read the history of King William’s wars, — but if he has not, I then inform him, — that one of the most memorable attacks in that siege, was that which was made by the English and Dutch upon the point of the advanced counterscarp, between the gate of St. Nicolas, which inclosed the great sluice or water-stop, where the English were terribly exposed to the shot of the counter-guard and demi-bastion of St. Roch: The issue of which hot dispute, in three words, was this; That the Dutch lodged themselves upon the counter-guard, and that the English made themselves masters of the covered-way before St. Nicolas-gate, notwithstanding the gallantry of the French officers, who exposed themselves upon the glacis sword in hand.
I am surprised that anyone familiar with the book would not now know it, having been reminded of the author's Uncle Toby, his wound, and where he got his wound.

If no-one gets it by tonight, I'll give the answer.

Okay, I think I've got it, but it was the "begun a new book" that was the hint I needed. I haven't read it, but it's been on my potential read list for a while.

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne?

Is it a worthy book to read? One of my English professors suggested it, but it is rather long so I've been postponing it.

Okay, something a little more fun, well for me anyway...

First, a quote for all of us at MobileRead:

It's OK. It takes a bit of getting used to, and you should just read for the fun of the words, rather than expect the plot to advance, as it's a series of digressions about his family.

I haven't read it straight through myself. I probably should, one of these days.

Hmmm...no takers. Not even a nibble. We'll try a couple more and then give some hints tomorrow.

I refuse to give hints until at least someone guesses something. It is improper to give hints without guesses.
