Where I am the sun is shining.

Poor Brisbane and other flooded areas have to start the clean-up today.
So many heart-breaking stories.
For some, it will take years to recover.

Let's see how the insurance companies re-act to all of this.

Today is the type of day the word 'dreich' was developed ...

Dull and grey, overcast, drizzly, cold, misty (close on fog) and down-right miserable.

Snow Day #4 here. Truly, most state roads and interstates are in pretty good shape now, some of them even back to normal. Neighborhood streets, though, are still very icy if they are shaded by trees. We've had beautiful sunshine the past two days

which has helped a lot even though the temp is still below freezing. I drove over to my mom's house and actually made it inside this time.

We had lunch and a good visit, and I tried, mostly in vain, to clear some of her driveway so I can at least walk up and down it safely. I did manage to "rough up" some of the ice for about half its length, but the last stretch is difficult to get across. (Socks outside shoes works best, though!) While I was out there, the mail jeep came for the first time this week -- and got stuck in front of mom's house. It took two different neighbors with shovels and hoes to get her free. And THAT is why I've been parking down the street from mom's house. Anyway, overall it's looking up, and after a ridiculous low of 14F tonight, we're actually going to get above freezing tomorrow! Yes!

Our river the Waal is overflowing with all the water from the gletsjers in Switzerland---through Germany-----Nijmegen. But of course nowhere near Australian levels.

Does that normally happen this time of year? Gletsjers = glaciers, right?

The Waal doesn't overflow every year, but fairly often; the city-council have build a kind of movable dams to protect the houses and restaurants. They are in place now, as more water is predicted to come. Several German towns have much more water than us.
In summer it's lovely to bike to the Waal, walk a bit, drink some wine or bike to the other side of the river

It is a beautiful sunny

and cool/warm day! But there are lots of smells around. I can only imagine how bad the stink must be in Brisbane!

It was a beautiful sunny day here. Didn't get above mid-20's F though.

Apparently there's snow on the ground in 49 of the 50 United States. Everywhere but Florida. That picture in the article is near where my s. other works, luckily he doesn't work on Wednesdays anyway.

Took him two hours to shovel the cars out this morning. His dad in Atlanta finally managed to slide down to the mailbox and back this morning.
