The preview button. That is what she was talking about. Sorry Purple Lady, it was not clear to me what you were writing. I have never used the preview button until now, but it is an extra step. Here is fast way to identify the type of ebook on Kobo's new website:

1) For ade epubs: Go to the 'Read this On' section located on the bottom right corner of the ebook page. If the 'Read this On' has Blackberry then it is an epub (full line: DESKTOP, eREADERS, ANDROID, TABLETS, IOS, BLACKBERRY, WINDOWS). Check via the preview button in your library to verify ade epub; I will skip this step though.

2) For kepub or an open epub: If Blackberry is absent from the 'Read this On' section , (full line: DESKTOP, eREADERS, ANDROID, TABLETS, IOS, WINDOWS) then it is a very good chance it is a kepub or an open epub. Click on the preview button and goto your library. As GeoffR has indicated, if the download option is Epub (DRM-free), then you have an open epub. If there is no download option, then you have an kepub.

3) For PDFs: the 'Read this On' section is blank then it is likely a pdf. There is no preview button for pdfs. Check with Kobo CS before purchasing. I don't as I know that it is a pdf.


For Kobo, these three steps are unnecessary and we should not have to resort to a preview button (personally, I do not want a preview button), instead tell us up front on the main page what format we are about to purchase. Last November (2013) your Customer Service rep told me that this feature will be happening soon, it is now April 2014 and you have done nothing.

@shunter some of us were told by Kobo cust serv that the format would be programmed back onto the site not long after the new look site was introduced last August(?).

We've been dealing with the how to identify an Epub since then.

You'll find everything you need to know down in the Kobo Devices sub-forum where there are many many threads on it. (I've got one there from last August(?) Myself).

We all live in hope that the next Maintenance update will include this vital info. So far we've hoped in vain.

I'm not intending that my post come across as negative .... your information will have no doubt helped newer members to this thread understand a bit more about the Kobo purchasing process.

Which country are you in?

When you created the account did you click on 'Standard Checkout'?

Take a look at 'My Account' in the bottom right hand corner.

Are you on the new look checkout or the old (original) checkout?

If you're on the new look then the pic below will show what's on your My Account screen.

If you're on the old checkout then the option to enter a promo code won't show unless it's discountable.

I'm in the United States, with standard checkout and the new checkout.
It was a baen book in my cart, so I was under the impression the coupons would work for them.

Got to admit I'm not sure that I've ever bought a baen book, but my recollection is that it's been discussed here before and I thought that some of the books were discountable.

In the meantime perhaps you could try the Kobo India site .... all books seem to be discountable and most seem much cheaper than elsewhere to boot!!

Other country sites where you could get excellent value for money and usually discountable books are:

Mexico (USD)
Norfolk Island (USD) (actually part of Aus - except Kobo thinks differently)
Hong Kong (HKD)
Peurto Rico (USD) (sp?)
Singapore (USD)

As to what publishers are discountable - all bar the big 6 (?), and I can never remember who they are, because I shop in countries that don't support non discountable books.

I actually found out recently that most if not all of the Liaden book series published by Bean is now available on Kobo Canada and couponable.

Ravensknight, just in case you didn't click continue, the promo box is on the second page of the new checkout. Since the old checkout was only one page, I think a lot of people figure that if they click that blue continue button they will be buying the book, but it just takes you to the second page of a two page checkout.
