There's something to be said for taking advantage of a really good sale, but only for books that you really want. My suggested method for deciding this was whether they were already on your Amazon wish list.

Enjoy your holiday reading, and don't buy until there's another sale!

I haven't bought any new ebooks since I got this year's Hugo Voter Packet (three of whose novels I already own, and at least two new-to-me writers I'll have to be checking out now), although I have received over a dozen special-order paper books in the mail since then.

Frankly, unless there's a really good sale or other incentive for purchasing (support an author I like and want to encourage), I just tend not to buy e-books at all and get most of mine from giveaway freebies and the library.

Just bought 2 books from the Amazon sale, they were only 99p each but not on my wishlist.
On a more positive note have put 100 other books on my wishlist :-)

I almost bought a book at fictionwise today. Luckily, I checked my archive first and found I'd already bought it in May 2009.

The first rule of the Ebook Buying Addicts' Support Thread is that you do talk about the Ebook Buying Addicts' Support Thread.

Or perhaps the first rule is that one shouldn't buy ebooks when they're not on special offer and you already have a long TBR list of books you've already bought.

I sneer at people buying Mobipocket format eBooks.

I've fallen off the wagon again. And only 4 days into August. I've just bought a subscription to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction at Amazon.

Of course, I was subscribed before, when it was available at Fictionwise. And it is a very good price - $0.99/month US, £0.99/month UK. Which is a lot cheaper for those in the US than the old Fictionwise subscriptions, and about the same for me.

But I must admit that I do still have a backlog of all of 2005 and half of 2006 to read...

I crunched my numbers for 2011 in regard to eating away at my TBRs. The news on the pbook front is encouraging; I bought five pbooks but have read 21, for a slightly better than 4/1 read/bought ratio. My plan is to bump that up to 5/1; then I get to buy a pbook for every five pbooks from the TBRs that I read (thanks to the challenge at GR for this idea). It will still be years before I get through the stacks of books, but the trend is in the right direction.

The ebook news is more problematic. My stats are a little murky, but it looks as if I've bought 31 ebooks this year and have read 13. My goal for the year is to get the read/bought ratio to 1/1, which is very doable, especially since I've just about exhausted the options at the three overdrive libraries I use. The pertinent issue here is that almost all my ebook purchases this year were bought before Random House joined the Evil Cabal, so mostly the temptation doesn't exist anymore.

As a result, I have mixed feelings about eating away at my eTBRs (which include pre-2011 purchases). Most of the books were bought at very attractive prices which can no longer be duplicated. Once I read the ebooks I own, I'll be seriously out of pocket keeping myself in ereading material and I greatly prefer reading on my devices these days.

I suppose the lemonade-from-lemons aspect is that this should encourage me to keep at my pTBRs, which are cluttersome and have been around much (and in some cases, much, much, much) longer. But reading is for love, so ultimately I'll read what I feel like reading.

^Agreed on the love aspect. Ultimately we read what we're interested in at the time. Part of the the point of this group for me is to be wary of investing a lot in things we may never read and to evalutate our purchases more carefully. Clutter weighs us down whether it is physical or electronic.

This thread has made me make lists and then lists of lists and then to organize a required reading list for myself for next year. I'm excited about what I'll be reading next year.

16 days since last book purchase.
