So on my new card it should just be
.adobe-digital-editions
.kobo
.kobo-images
??? nothing is happening when re inserted and trying to turn on. won't even try to cycle

That looks correct. If you look at the µSD card after imaging with the Minitool Partition Wizard or equivalent, do you see 2 ext4 partitions and a FAT32 partition?
