Strangely enough, none of our other gmail accounts got this offer, although they all got an almost identical email about the 80s music sale, just without the code at the bottom. I would have thought that maybe my husband's gmail account got it because he never (but never) uses it, so sort of a "come back" thing, but my son never uses his gmail account either, and I have a secondary gmail account that I don't use much either, and neither one of them got the offer either - just the one out of four. It appears just about as random as Kobo's "come back, we've missed you" codes, but I somehow have more faith that Google has some sort of rational marketing strategy behind this, even if I can't figure it out ! And more faith that the code will actually work !

I've used these sorts of codes quite happily in the past to buy some big multi-disk compilation albums (e.g. Rolling Stones Singles Collection: The London Years). Guess I'll have to go looking again some time soon.

One question - does anyone know a way to "gift" music in Google Play? If it were possible, I'd rather gift the album over to the account I use, rather than buy it in my husband's account. I can't see any obvious way to do it. It's just a minor thing, since the music is downloadable, but would be nicer to have it in my account than in his.
If you have Google + you can share music.

My main PC is Windows 7, which I'm happy with. Since I had to replace the hard drive a couple of weeks ago, I considered installing Windows 10, but then found out Dell said it might not work properly with 10.
I got my ASUS desktop/tablet (Transformer) converted last night. I had bought it back when Win 8/8.1 was the most recent rendition of Windows, but had never used the Transformer (long story, I won't get into it).

I think that people who used Win 8/8.1 long enough got used to it and have no problem using it now. That might be the case with you. However, when I was trying to use Win 8/8.1 just long enough to convert the machine to Win 10, I got so angry that I thought that I would burst an aneurysm. Its unfathomable to me why Microsoft ever created it.

I am so happy now.

Get the latest free download from Classical-music.com by logging into the website, and then navigating to this webpage. A red "download now" button should appear on top of the thumbnail of the album cover. Click it. The download to your hard drive will begin immediately, and then you can listen to it!

This week's download is Brahms Ballade No. 1--Andante, Op. 10.

This "is the first of Brahms's Four Ballades, Op. 10, performed by British pianist Paul Lewis. The recording, which won a five-star review in the June issue of BBC Music Magazine also features Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1, performed with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Daniel Harding.

'Lewis and Harding strive for an ideal balance between Brahms's Romantic and Classical aspects,' writes Erik Levi. 'They encapsulate the contrasting modes of defiance and lyricism'."

You may recall that all of Classical-music.com's free downloads (all that I've received, anyway) are in the MP3 format.

Google Play has newly marked down some great albums again.

Being the frugal person that I am, I consider 99 cents the most that anyone should pay for any album by anyone. So, I'm going to list the 99 cent ones and for you spendthrifts (), you can go to this Google Play webpage and see all of the albums that they have marked down right now.

Again, here are the 99 cent ones:
Panic! At The Disco. Death of a Bachelor.
Deftones. Gore.
Twenty One Pilots. Blurryface.
The Goo Goo Dolls. Boxes.
Disturbed. Immortalized.
Blake Shelton. If I'm Honest. (Doesn't appear on the webpage whose link that I gave earlier, but here's the dedicated webpage for the album: https://play.google.com/store/music/...Music_SLOT-CTA).

Any recommendations? I haven't heard of any of the artists except for The Goo Goo Dolls and Blake Shelton. I'm going to go sample the 'Dolls' album right now (I'm not a Blake Shelton fan).

If you are a Naxos newsletter subscriber, be sure to see in your email inbox the announcement of this month's free albums.

When I say free, I mean that one is free. You get a choice of three albums, as you probably remember. Those choices will be listed and described at nearly all the way at the bottom of your email message.

Here's the blurb from Klaus Heymann at Naxos about all three of this month's offerings:
If you're in the northern hemisphere, it's time to prepare for the 'season of mists and mellow fruitfulness', so described by Keats in his poem To Autumn, and prescribed for the months that lie ahead. And while El Niño continues to confound our seasonal bearings with some wobbly weather patterns, the reference points for musical autumns in the repertoire remain intact. This month we invite you to get into the autumnal mood by downloading one of our free albums that have music for the season threaded into their programmes.

For your convenience, I'm listing this month's choices. You can find out much more about each one in your email message from Naxos:
Grieg, Orchestral Works, Vol. 1.
Tchaikovsky, The Seasons.
Schubert, Lied Edition, Vol. 2.

And, remember, that all of the albums are in the flac format.

In case you have not subscribed to Naxos' newsletters yet, here is their homepage.

Get, free, the MP3 single, Beloved, from Uma Silbey's album Voyager. It is the Domo Music Group's free song of the week.

The song is in the MP3 format. In case you are unfamiliar with this song of Uma Silbey, among the tags given to it are "new age," "healing," "relaxation," "yoga," "New Age." I haven't listened to any New Age music since I broke my Enya addiction about 20 years ago, but I must say that I found this song to be a pleasant one.

Here's the webpage to go to to get the free download.

If you are a subscriber to Alexander Street's free music newsletter, you should have in your email inbox already information about the most recent once-every-two-week free download.

This current one is of the beautiful Cosi fan tutte, a piece of about 4 1/2 minutes in length.

Alexander Street says about it that it "features the overture to Così fan tutte, one of the three famous Da Ponte-Mozart opera collaborations, first performed in 1790. This recording features the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana under the direction of Alain Lombard."

For some reason, it seemed more difficult than usual actually finding the link to the music this time. In your email message from them, click on the blue "download" button. That will take you to a page with an aqua blue box near the top of the page which has a link in blue with "Overture to Cosi fan tutte." Click it. You should know what to do next in order to download the piece.

Mea culpa. I think that you may have mentioned that before.

I think that I'm correct in saying now that there is just one of the free classical music sites that I follow/make posts about which requires that you be a newsletter subscriber (unless there is some workaround that I don't know about)--it's Naxos. They make it worth your while, though. First of all by letting you have an entire album. And, second, by giving you three choices. The downside is that a new offer comes only once a month.

At Classical-music.com, "This week's free download is an aria by Sebastian Durón, 'Se hacemos treguas', performed by soprano Eva Juárez. It comes from a recent collection of Durón arias Lagrimas, Amor, recorded on Pan Classics, and was Opera choice in the June issue of BBC Music Magazine.

'Juárez's crystalline voice floats gently down over single strings, Spanish harp and guitar,' writes George Pratt. 'This is an endearing, often revelatory recording, and comes warmly recommended."

To get the freebie, make sure that you're logged in to the Classical-music.com website. Then, click on "download now" on this webpage.

On the heels of its three recent Emmy nominations, Season 2 of ABC’s comedy series Black-ish will be available for free on iTunes through Wednesday, August 17. All 24 episodes, including the praised “Hope,” about the family’s reaction to a verdict in a trial involving alleged police brutality, are available.
