$3.99 -- The Admirals -- Walter Borneman/ Brian Troxell --> 17.2 hrs/ R-4.5 --> history

Quote:
The Admirals: Nimitz, Halsey, Leahy, and King - The Five-Star Admirals Who Won the War at Sea

Whispersync: the Audible book is $3.99, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($3.99)

The Admirals tells the story of how history's only five-star admirals triumphed in World War II and made the United States the world's dominant sea power.

Only four men in American history have been promoted to the five-star rank of Admiral of the Fleet: William Leahy, Ernest King, Chester Nimitz, and William Halsey. These four men were the best and the brightest the navy produced, and together they led the U.S. Navy to victory in World War II, establishing the United States as the world's greatest fleet.

In The Admirals, award-winning historian Walter R. Borneman tells their story in full detail for the first time. Drawing upon journals, ship logs, and other primary sources, he brings an incredible historical moment to life, showing us how the four admirals revolutionized naval warfare forever with submarines and aircraft carriers, and how these men - who were both friends and rivals - worked together to ensure that the Axis fleets lay destroyed on the ocean floor at the end of World War II.

First, to possibly save some trouble in checking themselves, this book is rated 4.4 at both Amazon (as an ebook) and Audible (as an audiobook).

I had never bought an audiobook from Nook. But I bought this one. Big mistake. I found out after purchasing it that you had to have a Nook app (I could've lived with that) and the app is only available for Android and iOS. That I can't live with. Problem is, I want to listen using my Windows laptop. Why wouldn't Nook have an app for the Windows computer, like it seems that everyone else does? I have an Android phone, but it's having some kind of memory recognition issue that I haven't been able to troubleshoot and fix.

So, that's $3.99 down the drain. But I'll look on the bright side: I could have spent more than that on another audio and been out even more than $3.99. I "swore off" Nook ebooks after they wouldn't let us download ones in our libraries anymore; now I'm "swearing off" Nook audiobooks.

I'm wishing Barnes and Noble a swift demise (you could say that I hope that they meet their Waterloo. ha). I just hope that before they go I can get all of my ebooks that I bought from them.

I actually thought about that as a possibility after I made the post. But you saved me some digging to find info about it. I'll check into it.

I hope B&N didn't read what I said earlier. B&N: if you're reading this thread, I didn't really mean what I said about you earlier. Okay? (ha)

Thanks.

In the off chance you don't already have an Audible account (or you're willing to, you know, set up a new one), AppSumo is offering a 3-month Audible Gold subscription for just $3. As you've no doubt guessed, it's for new customers only. That subscription nets you three audiobooks (one per month), after which you can cancel (and still keep the books) or continue for $14.95 per month.

$2.95 -- Black Man in a White Coat -- Damon Tweedy/ Corey Allen --> 8.7 hrs/ R-4.5 --> memoir
Quote:
Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine

Whispersync: no deals at this time

One doctor's passionate and profound memoir of his experience grappling with racial identity, bias, and the unique health problems of black Americans.

When Damon Tweedy first enters the halls of Duke University Medical School on a full scholarship, he envisions a bright future where his segregated, working-class background will become largely irrelevant. Instead he finds that he has joined a new world where race is front and center. When one of his first professors mistakes him for a maintenance worker, it is a moment that crystallizes the challenges he will face throughout his early career. Making matters worse, in lecture after lecture the common refrain for numerous diseases resounds: "more common in blacks than whites."

In riveting, honest prose, Black Man in a White Coat examines the complex ways in which both black doctors and patients must navigate the difficult and often contradictory terrain of race and medicine. As Tweedy transforms from student to practicing physician, he discovers how often race influences his encounters with patients. Through their stories, he illustrates the complex social, cultural, and economic factors at the root of most health problems in the black community. These elements take on greater meaning when Tweedy finds himself diagnosed with a chronic disease far more common among black people. In this powerful, moving, and compassionate book, Tweedy deftly explores the challenges confronting black doctors and the disproportionate health burdens faced by black patients, ultimately seeking a way forward to better treatment and more compassionate care.

$4.99 -- Seveneves -- Neal Stephenson/ multiple --> 31.9 hrs/ R-4.2 --> sci-fi
Quote:
Whispersync: the Audible book is $5.49, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($17.99)

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anatham, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon comes an exciting and thought-provoking science fiction epic - a grand story of annihilation and survival spanning five thousand years.

What would happen if the world were ending?

A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space.

But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain....

Five thousand years later, their progeny - seven distinct races now three billion strong - embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown...to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.

A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is both extraordinary and eerily recognizable. As he did in Anathem, Cryptonomicon, the Baroque Cycle, and Reamde, Stephenson explores some of our biggest ideas and perplexing challenges in a breathtaking saga that is daring, engrossing, and altogether brilliant.
