Funny enough, my main memory of the book was Elijah using the bathroom and peeing in a fake waterfall. The book sounds so much weirder than it really is.

This is book 2 of a 2 book series. YA Fantasy. Author of the Paper Magician. I read book 1, Spellmaker, in January and gave it a 4 star. Not a fan of YA either. Whispersync audiobook an additional $1.99.

A lot of the weirdness is because the Solarians were incredibly weird, even by Spacer standards. They're a planet full of people who can't stand having anything to do with other people in person. They even developed technology that allows them to have basically a moving video call. That way they can go on walks together, just not, you know, together. Oh and they had tons and tons of robots, more per person than any other Spacer planet.

It wasn't too big a surprise finding out how they'd ended up in later books:

They had evolved into hermaphrodites that could reproduce asexually.
They weren't really human anymore.

So, after lkmiller encouraged me that sale books still earn the 10% discount, I decided on a whim to try it out. My big critique is that it's hard to browse the store to see which titles are eligible for the VIP 10% discount unless you are already a VIP subscriber. Having said that, my Kobo wishlist is some 200+ items strong at this point and a very good many of of them are eligible. I don't know about the majority or not, but enough to make me optimistic about the prospect of paying for the membership. (…I should probably start a new Calibre column to track price paid for a given book, and whether it was discounted for being a VIP member, so that I can easily run a report on my savings for a given timespan.)

Reading that makes me want to reread the Roger MacBride Allen Caliban trilogy. Why haven't those seen an official ebook release?

In certain views, like after you've done a search and are looking at a list of books, there's a checkbox at the bottom of the left column to filter for promo code eligible books.

Thanks for that. I'll contact them, but I'm pretty sure it's complications with the books being licensed under the Asimov estate that keeps them out of print.
