If the blood clot dries out or falls out, it can apparently lead to swelling and excruciating pain in the exposed bony bits. I have a vague recollection that it happens mostly to the lower wisdom teeth and moreso if the tooth was impacted (or, as that's why I had mine removed, it might just have been the dentist trying to scare me)

you do NOT want a dry socket! it is when the blood clot has formed at the incision/opening in your mouth and you manage to dislodge it. not fun

Dry Socket sounds Wundrefol! Luckily i had my top ones removed.

still numb, and no pain yet.

I did get 20 hydrocodone, though, in case i need them. that, plus a bottle of extra strength tylenol and a tube of maximum strength anbesol gel should get me through it.

The pain never really gets too bad. It'll hurt randomly a few days later after you go off pain killers. It's cleaning out the gunk from the empty sockets that's....blegh.

Yeah, Unfortunately, I have a horribly sensitive gag reflex. This gauze is almost nauseous.

I have three - the fourth impacted and was removed under local anaesthetic. Well, more correctly I suppose, under about 7 local anaesthetics, as my mouth refused to go numb (my tongue did, but only cos they managed to inject one lot straight into one of the tongue nerves). I had jaw ache for a while afterwards (it took longer than normal to get teh root out, and my mouth just doesn't open that wide naturally!), but nothing else. I did end up removing my own stitches though because they started to really annoy me!
